SPF 15 Tinted Moisturizer Oil-Free
Brown’s longstanding tinted moisturizer finally has an oil-free counterpart, and it’s every bit as good as the original (which was reformulated to coincide with the launch of the oil-free version).
This fragrance-free tinted moisturizer features an in-part titanium dioxide sunscreen and has a lightweight, slightly creamy texture that applies smoothly and blends evenly. The only real negatives are the price and the rather low amount of titanium dioxide, a crucial ingredient for UVA protection.
Nonetheless, it still provides soft color, weightless hydration, and sheer coverage with a natural matte finish. As a bonus, this contains cell-communicating ingredients and antioxidants for extra benefits, and the packaging Brown chose will keep these delicate ingredients stable.
Best for normal to oily or combination skin, this comes in a range of mostly neutral shades for fair to dark (but not very dark) skin tones. Be careful with the slightly peach Light and avoid the noticeably peach Medium to Dark shade. Alabaster Tint is highly recommended for very fair skin!
- Lightweight texture and even application.
- Sheer, natural coverage with a soft matte finish.
- Great range of shades for fair to dark skin tones.
- Formula contains cell-communicating ingredients and antioxidants in packaging that will keep these sensitive ingredients stable during use.
- No shades for very dark skin.
- Contains only a small amount of titanium dioxide, the key ingredient to protect from the sun’s UVA rays.
Note: This foundation’s rating is due to its overall performance rather than its SPF rating. Due to concerns about people not applying sunscreen liberally enough to get the amount of SPF protection stated on the label, it is often recommended to look for SPFs with ratings higher than 15. If you plan to use foundation as your sole source of facial sun protection, consider using one rated SPF 20 or greater. If the foundation with sunscreen you choose is rated less than an SPF 20, we strongly advise applying it over a daytime moisturizer rated SPF 15 or greater and following it with a pressed powder rated SPF 15 or greater. That way, you’re ensuring sufficient broad-spectrum protection which is essential for having and maintaining healthy, younger-looking skin at any age.
Bobbi Brown At-A-Glance
Strengths: A good cleanser and eye makeup removers; some impressive foundations, with options for all skin types and preferences; very good blushes and eyeshadows (powder and cream); several top-notch mascaras; mostly excellent brushes.
Weaknesses: Multiple moisturizers in jar packaging, otherwise great products hindered with irritating fragrant oils or fragrance components.
It all began with lipsticks. In 1991, New York based makeup artist Bobbi Brown debuted a collection of ten lipsticks at Bergdorf Goodman, expecting to sell about one hundred units in a month. She sold more than that the first day. From there, it's been mostly success after success, as Brown launched her classic foundation stick, wrote her first book, Bobbi Brown Beauty The Ultimate Beauty Resource, and enjoyed continued attention as an in-demand makeup artist and beauty educator.
Today, Bobbi Brown's makeup that continues to excel with superior foundations, true matte blushes and eyeshadows, and with all of the other basics that are essential to anyone's makeup wardrobe. It isn't the least bit surprising that this makeup collection continues to do so well, because for many it's one-stop shopping that combines classic makeup application techniques with enough fun-yet-functional products to keep customer's interest piqued season to season.
Turning to the skincare collection, there are a few excellent formulas, but unfortunately, many are packaged in a jar, which means their beneficial ingredients are rendered useless due to air exposure (and bacterial contamination from spatulas or fingers). In addition, some suffer from the inclusion of potent fragrant essential oils. Those that should be avoided are noted in their respective reviews. That aside, color is without a doubt Bobbi Brown's strong point, but you will find a few sleeper hits among the selection of skincare products.
