Brand Overview
"Soothing" is the wrong adjective for this plant oil-based lip balm! Although the plant oils and emollients like lanolin and shea butter are brilliant for dry, chapped lips, the active ingredients menthol and camphor are well-known irritants that have the potential to make chapped lips worse, not better!
If those active ingredients weren't enough of a hindrance, the formula also contains spearmint, cornmint, and eucalyptus oils plus a series of potentially problematic plant extracts. Quite frankly, this is one of the most irritant-laden lip balms we've ever reviewed, and it is adamantly not recommended.
- Several of the emollients and non-fragrant plant oils are great for dry lips.
- Inexpensive.
- Contains a "who's who" list of ingredients known to irritate lips.
- The active ingredients function as counter-irritants, meaning the irritation they cause is so strong that it can counter other signs of irritation, like itching.
Let the cooling combination of Menthol and Eucalyptus Oil soothe seriously dry lips while Shea Butter helps moisturize them. 100% natural, this balm leaves your lips looking healthy, feeling happy and hopelessly hydrated.
Strengths: Inexpensive.
Weaknesses: Many products have potent fragranced formulas; several formulas packaged in jars, which compromises their ingredients.
With humble beginnings in the town of Bangor, Maine, Burt's Bees is a brand focused on natural-themed, earth-friendly skincare. Unfortunately, in many cases, this also translates to less than beneficial formulas as not all of the natural ingredients used are helpful for skin.
Many of the plant extracts and oils used in these products, including orange oil, cinnamon oil, clove oil, lemon oil, eucalyptus oil, pine tar, alcohol, lime oil, and balsam peru, are problematic for skin and present a significant risk of irritation or a sensitizing reaction. Both the intriguing philosophy and inexpensive products are attractive, but it takes more than that to establish reliable products that are good for skin. Its also important to consider the potential benefit (or potential harm) of the ingredients used.
There are some formulas to consider among the brands offerings, but some to be wary of, see our individual reviews on Burt's Bees products for more details.
