Brand Overview

Cetaphil’s Soothing Gel-Cream certainly isn’t the flashiest moisturizer you’ll encounter, but when it comes to providing gentle hydration for dry, sensitive skin, it fits the bill.

This fragrance-free gel-cream instantly moisturizes skin, leaving it feeling softer, smoother, and looking plumped. It absorbs quickly to a non-greasy finish that’s suitable for application anywhere.

The active ingredient here is a 0.5% concentration of allantoin, long-proven to help soothe and replenish skin, even sensitive skin. It’s backed up by aloe, shea butter, glycerin, panthenol, and soybean and sunflower oils, all of which serve to moisturize, protect, and retain skin’s hydration.

It’s not the most state-of-the-art blend of ingredients, but if you’re looking for a standby moisturizer that even sensitive, cracked, irritated skin will likely tolerate well, this does the job admirably. As such, it gets our seal of approval.

A couple of notes: this moisturizer comes in 3-, 8-, and 16-ounce sizes. We recommend purchasing the 3 or 8 ounce sizes, since both are packaged in opaque squeeze tubes. In contrast, the 16 ounce size is packaged in a jar that compromises many of this product’s beneficial ingredients. Also, the inactive ingredients here are listed in alphabetical order, instead of in order of concentration, which is allowable in products with an active ingredient listed. Still, it’s more useful to see the concentration, since that let you know just how much of an ingredient is contained in the product.

Pros:
  • Gel-cream instantly hydrates and plumps normal to dry skin.
  • Contains soothing and replenishing allantoin.
  • Includes hydrating and restoring ingredients, including shea butter and panthenol.
  • Packaged to protect its light- and air-sensitive ingredients (in smaller sizes).
  • Fragrance free.
Cons:
  • Largest size is packaged in a jar which hinders the formula’s best ingredients.
Jar Packaging: No
Tested on animals: Yes

Cetaphil At-A-Glance

This familiar, widely distributed skin-care collection is manufactured by Galderma, the same company that markets the prescription products Differin and MetroGel.Given the dermatology heritage of Galderma, it's surprising the Cetaphil line hasn't advanced beyond the basics. Yes, most of what's available is a safe bet for those with sensitive skin!

If you're in search of simplicity, this is a good line to consider. We should note that many of the formulas omit more complex anti-aging ingredients, but they can always be used alongside a serum or treatment of your choosing.

Strengths: Inexpensive; mostly fragrance-free products; affordable and widely available; offers complete ingredient lists on its website; the sunscreens offer sufficient UVA protection.

Weaknesses:A few formulas could be updated with more complex ingredients, but forgoing that there is a lot to like here.
