Brand Overview

This chubby, needs-sharpening, eyeliner pencil draws on a thick water-resistant line that can be easily softened (if desired) by the built-in rubber smudger on the bottom of the pencil. SmolderEYES can be worn alone, or set with a powder eyeshadow for extra durability. The colors range from neutral browns and charcoal to violet and indigo, most of which have gold-toned specks of glitter. Thankfully, the glitter stays on and does not flake into eyes—though, we do not recommend using this (or any) liner to rim the waterline of the eye.

Claims regarding "micronized clay" from the Amazon River are marketing hype. Clay—no matter where it's from—won't have an effect on how well eyeliner lasts, although clay can help absorb excess oil and too much clay in an eyeliner formula can create a dry texture that drags along skin as you apply.

All things considered, the only thing eye-popping about this ho-hum eyeliner is the price tag. For better options (many less expensive, that don't require sharpening), see our list of Best Eyeliners.

Tarte Cosmetics At-A-Glance

Tarte Cosmetics CEO and founder Maureen Kelly started Tarte in 1999, out of a desire to create a cosmetics line that would prove that glamour can be good for you. This comes in the form of products that highlight naturally-derived ingredients in their marketing campaigns, and occasionally taking swipes at the concept of synthetics in makeup.

This is ironic, as Tarte uses more than a few beneficial synthetically derived ingredients in their formulassilicones, synthetic fragrances, preservatives and on and on. However, well forgive them that as whats ultimately important is whether their products meet your needs, and to that we can say the brand excels in many areas at what they do.

However, a few products are a bit on the pricey side and there are a few iffy shades and textures to consider among their foundationsnoted in their respective reviews. A few caveats aside, most of Tarte's foundations, blush options, eye pencils and an ever-expanding range of innovative products demonstrate that color is what they do best.
