Brand Overview

The concept of contouring—shaping facial features through the use of makeup—is growing in popularity, and as a result there's a surge of products on the market designed to help you make the most of your features. Smashbox's #Shapematters palette is among them, but stands out because of just how many products you get! In addition to contouring face powders, there are a number of eyeshadows, as well as a couple of brow products. We're happy to say that the palette as a whole performs brilliantly, and with so much to offer, it easily earns our highest rating.

Smashbox calls the fragrance-free #Shapematters Palette portable, and if you're planning to take makeup with you while you're traveling and don't want a bag full of products, then this is definitely a palette worth its weight. However, it isn't portable if you're planning to carry this around on a daily basis in your purse—as this is one of the larger palettes we've come across!

That large size is one of the reasons we love this palette, though, as it truly makes this one-stop shopping. Inside this palette, there is a brow wax, two brow powders, four face contouring powders, and nine eyeshadows—and they're all generously sized, making this palette quite a value at its price point.

Value is also determined by quality though, and the quality of the products here doesn't disapooint! The brow wax does an excellent job of keeping stray brow hairs in place without making them seem too waxy or stiff; instead, the result is soft and natural-looking brows. The brow powders come in two shades: "Taupe" (suitable for blonde eyebrows) and "Soft Brown" (suitable for medium to dark eyebrows). Both shades apply somewhat sheer initially but are buildable and enhance brows naturally without the color fading throughout the day.

Four face powders are included: "Highlight," "Bronze," "Contour," and "Glow." Highlight is a creamy beige shade with slight shimmer that on lighter skin tones works as an all-over setting powder and on darker skin tones can buff out or soften some of the other shades. Bronze is a matte medium brown color that appears as a warm bronze on light to medium skin tones—without appearing orange. Contour is a matte medium-taupe brown that serves very well as a contour, as it mimics the appearance of natural shadows that fall on the face (without appearing muddy). Glow is a light peachy shade with soft champagne shimmer that adds luminosity to the face without obvious glitter or sparkle. All the powders are buttery-smooth and easy to apply, and all wear well throughout an average work day without fading.

The eyeshadows might be the true standouts of this palette, though. There are nine included, and they range from matte neutral shades to a couple of shimmery options (in purple-pink, gold, and platinum shades), and one very matte black. Their texture is incredibly smooth and easy to pick up with a brush, and they all blend remarkably well. The shimmer shades are attractive and do not flake, which is an added bonus.

We should note there is a good dual-ended brush included in this palette (one side is angled for using with the brow wax and powders, the other is a soft blending brush for the shadows), though you will definitely need more than one brush to use this many colors!

Overall, Smashbox's #Shapematters Palette is a standout thanks to the performance of its many products, and because considering the number of options included, it winds up being a beauty value. If you are looking for an all-in-one palette this is certainly one to consider!

Smashbox At-A-Glance

Two interesting things about Smashbox are that its name refers to the early, accordion-style cameras and that Smashbox is first and foremost a Hollywood-based photography studio. The company's creators, Dean and Davis Factor, have their heritage in makeuptheir great-grandfather was the legendary makeup artist Max Factor. The makeup, which debuted in 1996, began as a collection of trendy and fashion-forward colors coupled with a pleasingly neutral palette of foundations, concealers, and powders. Nowadays, there are exceptional options to choose from, but also some color products that fall short due to too sheer formulas or other issues noted in their respective reviews.

Where Smashbox has lived up to their Hollywood makeup pedigree is with a few standout formulas, including impressive lip products as well as excellent foundations, BB and CC cream options. Of course, the brand is also well-known for their range of makeup primerswhether thats a necessary step is up for debatebut nevertheless they do offer a few products in this category that are worth considering.
