Brand Overview

Tarte’s Shape Tape 12-Hour Eye Primer Stick has a creamy-smooth texture that’s easy to apply, and we love that it doesn’t contain any fragrance. Beyond this, it isn’t an eyeshadow primer to get excited about.

This primer is a chunky pencil that you swivel up from the base, no sharpening required. The stick glides over the eye area, adding a pink-beige color, a touch of shine, and light coverage. Unfortunately, the coverage is short-lived (it dissipates in minutes, so if you have any discoloration on your eyelids, expect to need concealer).

As for the color of this primer, it works as a neutral if you have light to medium skin, but those with darker skin will find this looks ashen and drab.

The main problem—and this defeats the purpose of using eyeshadow primer—is that the finish remains moist to the touch. It doesn’t set to a silky matte finish that enhances eyeshadow application and wear. If anything, this primer makes it more difficult to apply eyeshadow (especially powder eyeshadow) smoothly.

Another issue? Unless you set this primer with powder, expect to see some creasing and, if you have oily eyelids, expect smearing and eyeshadow fading at the end of the day.

In the end, Shape Tape 12-Hour Eye Primer Stick isn’t a worthwhile replacement for priming the eye area with a smooth, matte finish concealer. But if your preference is for a product labeled eyeshadow primer, you’ll find the best eye primers here.

  • Creamy-smooth texture is easy to apply to delicate eyelids.
  • Fragrance free.
  • Tend to crease shortly after application.
  • The coverage this provides is short-lived.
  • The solo shade won’t work as neutral eyeshadow for all skin tones.
  • Doesn’t enhance eyeshadow application or wear.

Tarte Cosmetics At-A-Glance

Tarte Cosmetics CEO and founder Maureen Kelly started Tarte in 1999, out of a desire to create a cosmetics line that would prove that glamour can be good for you. This comes in the form of products that highlight naturally-derived ingredients in their marketing campaigns, and occasionally taking swipes at the concept of synthetics in makeup.

This is ironic, as Tarte uses more than a few beneficial synthetically derived ingredients in their formulassilicones, synthetic fragrances, preservatives and on and on. However, well forgive them that as whats ultimately important is whether their products meet your needs, and to that we can say the brand excels in many areas at what they do.

However, a few products are a bit on the pricey side and there are a few iffy shades and textures to consider among their foundationsnoted in their respective reviews. A few caveats aside, most of Tarte's foundations, blush options, eye pencils and an ever-expanding range of innovative products demonstrate that color is what they do best.
