Brand Overview

Shadow & Light Bronze/Contour Perfector is a pressed powder compact that includes a deep, satin-matte bronzer on one half and a lighter, golden shimmer bronzer on the other. According to Becca, the premise behind it is that "the darker Shadow Bronze creates dimension, while the Light Bronze creates natural-looking light and lift with a subtle touch of shimmer." Our verdict? It's a nice product, though not necessarily as splurge-worthy as the price may indicate.

What supposedly makes Shadow & Light Bronze/Contour Perfector unique is the "contrasting black and white gold undertones" of its respective shades. That's marketing mumbo jumbo for the rich brown color of the "Shadow Bronze" shade and golden shimmer of the "Light Bronze" shade.

Extraneous verbiage aside, "Shadow Bronze" is indeed a dark bronze color—in fact, for the fair-skinned mavens out there this is going to seem intimidatingly dark upon first look. The good news is that we actually found it blended in surprisingly well among light and deep skin tones alike due to the sheer yet easily buildable application.

As for the "Light Bronze" shade, it offers subtle golden shimmer in a sheer tan hue, ideal for those areas where you want to mimic a sun-kissed glow. Both bronzers are fragrance free.

The bottom line: We wouldn't put Becca's Shadow & Light Bronze/Contour Perfector in the same category as our top-rated contouring/highlighting products (it's more of a bronzer duo than a contour/highlight set), but you can use the shades in tandem to add some level of dimension to the face or create a sunkissed look. Whether that's worth the steep price tag…well, that's up to you.

Pros:
  • Shadow Bronze shade is workable for light and deep skin tones due to its sheer yet easily buildable application.
  • Light Bronze shade offers subtle golden shimmer for a sun-kissed glow.
  • Pressed powder textures blends well.
  • Fragrance free.
Cons:
  • Those looking for true contouring products may be disappointed.

Becca At-A-Glance

Australian import Becca is a complete line of color cosmetics from makeup artist Rebecca Morrice Williams. As the story goes, Rebecca, like so many women, was having difficulty finding the perfect foundation. It seems her professional experience making up women of varying skin tones and preferences shared one truth: all women wanted perfect skin. This set Williams on her path to creating what would become the Becca line, a makeup collection that caters well to all skin tones.

While there are a number of excellent foundations here, what seems to have catapulted the brand onto the map is their numerous highlighter products. From liquids to powders, there are an incredible range of options in their luminizer categories, and many are superb.

Surveying the rest of this line revealed that Williams not only did her homework for foundation shades, the eyeshadows are amazingly silky, and many of their products for lips and cheeks are exemplary. Lastly, almost all of the makeup brushes from Becca are aces, and the options plentiful, especially for eye designs.

Strengths: Excellent concealers, foundations, highlighters and eyeshadows; good lip gloss; several outstanding brushes.

Weaknesses: Beats us, this is a strong collection of products.

Becca is available at Sephora, Ulta and via their Web site.
