Shade + Light Eye Contour Quad
Kat Von D's Shade + Light Eye Contour Quads are composed of four matte eyeshadows to enhance eye shape and color. Performance-wise, they get mixed reviews on the web. You'll find customers who extol nothing but the highest regard, versus others that complain about issues with blending and creasing. It turns out those polarizing reviews are justified. Some shades don't blend as smoothly as others, and creasing was an issue for us as well (when not paired a primer).
However, it's not all doom and gloom—these fragrance-free shadows deliver appreciable color payoff. Using an eyeshadow primer (here's the one we paired it with) intensifies the pigmentation, but even without it, the shades do well enough on their own.
The creasing issue is another case where pairing the shadows with a primer helped significantly. Without primer, we experienced creasing a few hours into wear, but with primer, it lasted all night, zero fading or creasing. Still, a great eyeshadow will go the distance without an assist from primer.
Shade-wise, the combinations of colors were hit or miss for us. We found "Rust" and "Sage" less cohesive than "Smoke" or "Plum" to create a unified look, but given that color preference is such a personal choice, we're not holding that against the rating.
Considering the variability of how well Shade + Light Eye Contour Quads blend and other pros and cons, we fall in the middle on this one. For eyeshadow quads with solid performance, see our Best Eyeshadows Palettes list—and don't forget to share your experience with this shadow in the Community Reviews section of this review!
- Pressed powder shadows deliver high quality color deposit.
- Fragrance-free formula.
- Inconsistent blendability, variable by shade.
- Creasing can be an issue (unless paried with primer).
Kat Von D At-A-Glance
Celebrity makeup lines are nothing newweve seen dozens of them over the yearsbut this one is a first in that it shocked us a bit. Kat Von Ds main claim to fame was her successful tattooing enterprise, and her role as a former reality TV show star. Now, she's a makeup entrepreneurand a very good one.
The line launched in 2007 with only two eyeshadow palettes, cream lipstick, and eyeliner, but since has expanded by adding several new products, including remarkable lip products, blushes and more. Just like most makeup lines, this is one to shop carefully; for every great product, there are a few that could use improvement.
All Kat Von D makeup products come packaged with the lines signature images of roses and thorns (perhaps to reinforce Von Ds love of tattoo design), which definitely makes these products stand out among a sea of blandly packaged makeup containers.
Strengths: Excellent eyeshadow palettes and trios; long-wearing cream and liquid lipstick; truly lasting powder blushes and bronzers.
Weaknesses: A few products on the pricey side (this is a minor quibble).
