Brand Overview

Rough & Bumpy Skin Daily Therapy Cream is a promising option for those struggling with keratosis pilaris (KP or "chicken skin) or other types of body bumps related to inflamed, reddened, or clogged pores. Unfortunately, despite an attractive price point, this body cream has its problems, too.

The high points include an intriguing mix of poly, alpha, and beta hydroxy acids (gluconolactone, ammonium lactate, and salicylic acid) along with a high amount of urea, an ingredient that can exfoliate while also moisturizing dry skin. These ingredients account for the "triple exfoliating complex" Gold Bond mentions in the claims, and this product's pH of 4.4, while not ideal, is fairly close to the range where these exfoliating ingredients work best—meaning you can expect some degree of exfoliation to improve bumpy skin.

The formula also contains some notable plant-based antioxidants but these won't work as well as they could due to this cream being packaged in a jar. See More Info to learn why this type of packaging can be a problem. The packaging is why this exfoliant cream isn't rated better, as you can find other exfoliating treatments packaged to keep those beneficial ingredients stable during use.

One more reason to think twice about this treatment is the inclusion of several fragrant, potentially irritating plant extracts. While the amounts of these are on the low side, they could be more problematic in a low-pH formula like this that also contains hydroxy acid ingredients. Some anti-irritants would've been preferred, as the plant extracts have little benefit for skin, bumpy or not. They're not "natural" AHA ingredients.

See our list of Best Body-Care Products for recommended alternative.

Pros:
  • Likely capable of exfoliating skin, which will reduce bumpy skin.
  • Could help improve keratosis pilaris on the body.
  • Inexpensive.
Cons:
  • Jar packaging won't keep the antioxidants stable once opened.
  • Contains some fragrant plant extracts that pose a risk of irritation (potentially compounded due to this formula's pH and blend of hydroxy acids).
More Info:

The fact that this product is packaged in a jar means the beneficial ingredients won't remain stable once it is opened. All plant extracts, vitamins, antioxidants, and most other state-of-the-art ingredients break down in the presence of air, so once a jar is opened and lets the air in these important ingredients begin to deteriorate. Jars also present a hygiene issue because even if you wash your hands or use a spatula to remove the product, you're introducing bacteria that causes further breakdown of key ingredients (Sources: Free Radical Biology and Medicine, September 2007, pages 818-829; Ageing Research Reviews, December 2007, pages 271-288; Dermatologic Therapy, September-October 2007, pages 314-321; International Journal of Pharmaceutics, June 12, 2005, pages 197-203; Pharmaceutical Development and Technology, January 2002, pages 1-32; International Society for Horticultural Science, www.actahort.org/members/showpdf?booknrarnr=778_5; and www.beautypackaging.com/articles/2007/03/airless-packaging.php).

Gold Bond At-A-Glance

Gold Bond is a staple at drugstores due to their small selection of body lotions, anti-itch products, and various foot-care products. Though there are a number of Gold Bond products containing the potent irritant menthol (particularly its foot care and "medicated" products), in recent years Gold Bond has taken great strides and now offers some impressive moisturizers that are fairly priced, too.
