Rock ‘N’ Kohl Iconic Liquid Eye Pencil
Rock 'N' Kohl Iconic Liquid Eye Pencil beautifully lives up to its promise of offering, "the effortless glide of a liquid liner with the soft, wax-rich result of a kohl." The creamy-smooth pencil applies a richly pigmented line of color with ease and sets to a stay put (and yes, even waterproof) finish. The exception is if you have ultra oily skin or use super emollient products—which can break it's pigments down and lead to smudging—otherwise, Rock 'N' Kohl offers impressive performance.
Shade-wise, the color selection is spot on with saturated matte hues of black, brown and grey, a couple of slightly metallic shades (deep purple and dark blue). As tenacious as the formula is, you'll definitely want a makeup remover to help get these off, and although we mentioned oily skin could cause this to smudge, prepping with an eyeshadow primer can significantly help deter that.
Rock 'N' Kohl Iconic Liquid Eye Pencil also comes in an "Eye Cheat" creamy-nude shade which is intended for lining the waterline to make eyes appear larger and wide awake. We were not able to test that shade, so leave us a comment if you have!
As for the claims about this eyeliner pencil containing crushed pearl powder, claimed to stimulate collagen production, that's complete marketing mumbo jumbo. While the formula won't deliver skincare-esque benefits, we are at least glad it's fragrance-free, which is always a plus, especially when it comes to the eye area.
Rock 'N' Kohl Iconic Liquid Eye Pencil comes close to earning our highest rating, but its old-school pencil design (without a sharpening mechanism) is a bit of a deterrent given its price tag. Today's best eyeliners are either self-sharpening or at least include a sharpener, making this liner from Charlotte Tilbury a less convenient option by comparison. We also noticed the creamy formula is tricky to whittle down to a narrow point if you want to create an ultra-fine line. However, if those aren't deterring factors for you, this a rockin' (albeit pricey) eyeliner pencil to try!
- Well thought out deeply saturated shades, with matte or subtle metallic finish options.
- Creamy pencil texture glides on effortlessly for a super smooth line of color.
- Sets to a fade-resistant, smudge-free finish (unless you have ultra oily skin).
- Tenacious, fragrance-free formula holds up in water as promised.
- Requires manual sharpening (and doesn't come with a tool to do so).
- Tricky to whittle the creamy pencil down to a narrow point if you want to create an ultra-fine line.
Charlotte Tilbury At-A-Glance
Charlotte Tilbury's journey into creating her own makeup line began back in her teen years when she discovered the transformative power of makeup. Fast-forward several years and celebrity clients later, Tilbury made a name for herself as a makeup artist who epitomized the glamorous beauty of the supermodel era in the 90s. Along the way, she became a consultant for beauty brands, and eventually decided to create her own line of makeup and select skincare products in 2013.
One of the strong suits of Charlotte Tilburys makeup is her take on color. The woman knows her way around flattering a complexion and making features pop, and you can see that in her shade range. That doesn't mean you wont find some misses along the way, but as a whole, the line offers an impressive selection of color.
Tilbury's skincare, on the other hand, doesn't fare quite as well. Between the use of jar packaging and some highly fragranced formulas, skin is left compromised (see individual reviews for details).
In no small way Tilbury's years of painting beautiful faces has helped shape what her makeup line is today. If you don't mind the $$$ factor, it's worth taking a look at the standouts which earn our highest rating.
Strengths: Excellent color selection; natural-looking foundation and concealer.
Weaknesses: The iconic Magic Cream comes in a jar; some highly fragranced formulas.
