Brand Overview

Alpha Skin Care's Renewal Body Lotion (formerly 12% AHA Silk Wrap Body Lotion and Revitalizing Body Lotion) has quite a few things going for it. This affordable body lotion's most important quality is its ability to exfoliate dry, rough, sun-damaged skin thanks to its high concentration of glycolic acid. The fact that it has a pleasant texture, is fragrance-free, and leaves skin feeling soft all day long help make an already good formula great.

The skin-smoothing exfoliation this body lotion provides comes from its 12% concentration of AHA (as glycolic acid). Coupled with the formula's pH of 4, this is a convenient way to get exfoliation and moisture from one product. The body care market is saturated with products that rely on physical exfoliation (re: scrubs), which are often laden with problematic ingredients, so we're happy that Alpha Skin Care provides us with a non-irritating, effective leave-on exfoliant option.

More to love, Renewal Body Lotion also contains a blend of classic emollients such as petrolatum, glycerin, mineral oil, and dimethicone that work well to keep dry skin feeling soft and comfortable. It's a somewhat basic formula, but is nevertheless a solid choice for an inexpensive AHA moisturizer for the body.

Note: Although Alpha Skin Care recently renamed this body lotion, the only formulary change lies in the preservative system used. The previous version relied on methylparaben and propylparaben and has since been replaced by idopropynyl butylcarbamate.

Alpha Skin Care's Renewal Body Lotion is suitable for all skin types experiencing dryness from the neck down. It shouldn't pose any issues for those with sensitive skin unless you know your skin tends to react negatively to glycolic acid, in which case this product's strength is likely too much for you. All others may want to give this exfoliating body lotion strong consideration.

Pros:
  • Exfoliates and smooths rough skin with its 12% concentration of glycolic acid.
  • pH of 4 ensures the glycolic acid functions as an exfoliant.
  • Contains classic, proven emollients to moisturize.
  • Fragrance-free.
  • Affordable.
Cons:
  • None.

Water, Petrolatum, Glycolic Acid, Glycerin, Ammonium Hydroxide, Stearic Acid, Dimethicone, Mineral Oil, Cetyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Lanolin Alcohol, PEG-40 Stearate, Sorbitan Stearate, Propylene Glycol, Diazolidinyl Urea, Idopropynl Butylcarbmate

Known primarily for their well-formulated AHA products, Alpha Skin Care (formerly Alpha Hydrox) recently got an impressive image update. Along with a new name, they've also revamped their products. Although the improvements were more visual and packaging-related than formulary-driven, the fact remains that Alpha Skin Care has a formidable range of effective AHA products, all with definitively researched glycolic acid. Kudos to the company for continuing to be direct about the AHA content (and pH) of their exfoliants, something most other lines selling AHA products prefer to keep a mystery.

Should the folks behind this brand choose to go back to the drawing board once again, they would do well to reconsider their current jar packaging if they intend to keep adding antioxidants and other beneficial ingredients to their efficacious but still predominantly basic products. Until then, you can rely on Alpha Skin Care for supplying AHA products that really work, and a few other surprises too, all affordably priced and readily available.
