Brand Overview

A longtime eye cream holdout, Paula’s Choice's debut into this category of products was well worth the wait. With its fragrance-free formula and impressive mix of ingredients, it’s an excellent option for those in seeking an intensive solution to pamper the skin around their eye area—especially if the facial moisturizer you use isn’t doing the job.

Despite its extra-rich cream formula, it isn’t packaged in a jar (it’s actually difficult to find a good eye cream this moisturizing that isn’t in a jar). Instead, Paula’s Choice chose a sturdy, foil-like squeeze tube, thus keeping its air and light-sensitive ingredients protected.

Another departure from convention: The RESIST Anti-Aging Eye Cream isn’t accompanied by the outlandish claims so common among eye-area solutions. There are no promises to deflate puffy eyes or conquer dark circles. Instead, its marketing is refreshingly true to its ingredient list, which is that it will help soothe while supplying skin with moisture and beneficial ingredients designed to improve the appearance of signs of aging.

Let’s talk about its texture—we were very happy to find that this is no repackaged facial moisturizer. It’s a seriously emollient, balm-like cream that blends without dragging or pulling, and is substantial enough that it keeps dry to very dry skin well moisturized over the course of the night.

If worn during the daytime, under your sunscreen, it serves as an excellent base for under-eye concealer. However, due to its extra moisturizing finish, it isn’t the best as a base for eyeliner or eyeshadow (unless you have extremely dry skin around the eye area).

Looking to its ingredient list, the RESIST Anti-Aging Eye Cream contains an interesting array of powerful soothing agents, among them glucosyl hesperidin and troxerutin. Glucosyl hesperidin has research demonstrating its power to restore and brighten skin (British Journal of Dermatology, 1999 and Biomolecules & Therapeutics, 2013).

Troxerutin, a type of flavonoid, has soothing and antioxidant benefits (Journal of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, 2010 and Journal of Dermatological Solution, 2002 and International Journal of Molecular Medicine, 2014). Troxerutin and glucosyl hesperidin are just two examples, as this contains a range of other impressive anti-agers—from multiple peptides to resveratrol and beta-glucan—making this an exceptional blend for a spectrum of concerns around the eye area.

Not everyone wants a separate product for their eye area. In fact, if you enjoy your facial moisturizer for that purpose, more power to you. It’s also true that beauty routines aren't always about what is necessary. If you just want something that goes beyond to provide your eye area with something extra, the RESIST Anti-Aging Cream ranks among our top recommendations for its impressive ingredient list and its moisturizing, fragrance-free formula.

Pros:
  • Fragrance free.
  • Contains powerful soothing and replenishing agents.
  • Impressive array of antioxidants and skin-restoring ingredients.
  • Packaged in a tube to keep its ingredients from exposure to air, light and objects (fingers, spatulas, etc.).
Cons:
  • None (Thats right. None).

Why You May Not Need an Eye Cream: There is so much you can do to address the signs of aging around your eyes, but it's not mandatory to use a product that claims to be specifically for the eye area. Any product loaded with antioxidants, emollients, skin-restoring, skin-brightening agents, and skin-soothing ingredients will work well around the eye area. Those ingredients don't have to come in a product labeled as eye cream, eye gel, eye serum, or eye balm—they can be present in any well-formulated moisturizer or serum.

Most eye-area products aren't necessary because many are poorly formulated, contain nothing special for the eye area, or come in packaging that doesn't maintain the effectiveness of their key ingredients.

Just because the product is labeled as a special eye-area treatment doesn't mean it's good for the eye area or any part of the face; in fact, many can actually make matters worse.

The number of eye-area products that lack even the most basic ingredients to help skin. For example, most eye-area products don't contain sunscreen, which is a serious problem if you aren't wearing the product under a broad-spectrum sunscreen rated SPF 30. That's because it leaves skin around your eyes vulnerable to sun damage—and that absolutely will make dark circles, puffiness, and visible signs of aging worse! Of course, for nighttime use, eye-area products without sun protection are just fine.

Whatever product you use in your eye area, regardless of what it is labeled, it must be well formulated and appropriate for the skin type around your eyes. You may prefer to use a specially labeled eye cream, but you might do just as well by applying your regular facial moisturizer and/or serum around your eyes.

Paula's Choice Skincare At-A-Glance

Paula's Choice Skincare was established in 1995 when best-selling beauty author and consumer advocate Paula Begoun (known as The Cosmetics Cop) decided to develop her own products.

As a natural evolution of Paula's personal mission to help consumers find the best products for their skin, the line has grown into an extensive range of skincare and makeup products that are formulated to meet the needs of almost every skin type and skin concern imaginable, from acne to wrinkles.

Paulas Choice Skincare relies on published research where available to discover the best ingredients for skin. Stable packaging is another feature of the brand, using innovative, opaque, and air-tight or air-restrictive components that keep antioxidants and other light- and air-sensitive ingredients from breaking down. The line is also 100% fragrance-free.

Disclosure: Paula Begoun is the creator of Beautypedia and founder of Paula's Choice Skincare products. Reviewing thousands of skincare and makeup products over the past 30 years, both on this site and in her best-selling books, Paula's mission has always been to help consumers find the best products possible for their skin. The Beautypedia Team proudly and unequivocally maintains this commitment. In addition, The Beautypedia Team reviews all products using the same rating standards and criteria, whether it is a Paula's Choice product or another brand.

Why are Paula's Choice Skincare products rated highly? The Paula's Choice Skincare Team would not launch a product unless it was worthy of a high rating from The Beautypedia Team. Paula and The Beautypedia Team were researching and reviewing products long before Paula's Choice Skincare ever existed and consumers were constantly requesting a skincare brand that met all of Beautypedias criteria. As a result, The Paula's Choice Skincare Team was created and uses the same research and criteria to formulate Paula's Choice products as The Beautypedia Team uses to review products.
