Brand Overview

Regenerist Whip Face Moisturizer SPF 25 offers broad spectrum sun protection from a delicately light, whipped cream-like texture that feels wonderful and is best for normal to slightly oily or combination skin.

Olay claims a shine-free finish, and while this feels matte, it doesn't look matte for too long, especially over oily areas.

Unlike the non-SPF versions of Olay's "Whip" moisturizers, the active sunscreen ingredients in this lends some natural shine that's tricky to eliminate. However, this still feels super light and works well under makeup.

We wish this wasn't packaged in a jar, as this type of packaging isn't ideal for the light- and air-sensitive ingredients on board, including the peptide and carob extract. See More Info for details.

There's another disappointment, too: This daytime moisturizer is short on antioxidants. Niacinamide provides some benefit in this regard, but your skin needs more than one great ingredient.

Just like the other Olay Whip products, this contains fragrance. Fragrance isn't skin-caring because it can trigger irritation. This isn't heavily scented (nothing about this product is heavy!) but consider this: If every product in your skincare routine has just a little fragrance, that can add up to a problem when everything is layered morning and evening!

You'll definitely get a wonderful cream-to-liquid texture, easy application, and smooth, satin-like finish from this daytime moisturizer, but you can find esthetically pleasing options on our list of Best Moisturizers, Daytime with Sunscreen that get more things right than this one, including missing the mark on earning an SPF 30 rating, the latest recommend rating for great daytime protection.

  • Provides broad spectrum sun protection.
  • Beautifully light, whipped cream-like texture feels great.
  • Works well under makeup.
  • Contains skin-restoring niacinamide.
  • Jar packaging won't keep the light- and air-sensitive ingredients stable once opened.
  • Comes up short on anti-aging ingredients.
  • Doesn't maintain a shine-free finish.
  • The fragrance poses a risk of irritation.

More Info:Jar Packaging & Anti-Aging Moisturizers: Beneficial anti-aging ingredients, which include all plant extracts, almost all vitamins, antioxidants, and other state-of-the-art ingredients, are unstable, which means they begin to break down in the presence of air. Once a jar is opened and lets air in, these important ingredients begin to deteriorate, becoming less and less effective. Routine exposure to daylight also is problematic for these ingredients.

Jar packaging is also unsanitary because you dip your fingers into the jar with each use, contaminating the product. This stresses the preservative system, leading to further deterioration of the beneficial ingredients.

Remember: The ingredients that provide the most benefit in addressing visible signs of aging must be in airtight or air-restrictive packaging to remain effective throughout usage. Buying products in this type of packaging means that the ingredients have the best chance of remaining effective—to the benefit of your skin!

Olay At-A-Glance

Starting decades ago with the now-classic Oil of Olay, this brand now offers an extensive range of skin-care products sold at drugstores and mass-market stores. Today's Olay lineup for those concerned about staving off the effects of aging skin is impressive, comprising their Regenerist, Pro X, and Total Effects lines. All of these (and several other Olay products) contain the B vitamin niacinamide. As you might expect, the claims made for it are inflated, but niacinamide is a very helpful ingredient for all skin types, capable of exerting multiple benefits.

In fact, perhaps the biggest complaint about Olay is that there are a number of repetitive formulas within and between the sub-brands make this line confusing and tricky to shop! Still, there is a lot to like about this drugstore stalwart, with its main drawback being a few formulas containing fragrance or other ingredients that have the potential to cause irritation.
