Regenerist Luminous Brightening & Protecting Lotion With Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 15 Fragrance Free
Regenerist Luminous Brightening & Protecting Lotion with Sunscreen SPF 15 Fragrance Free has a very long name, but if you can get past that mouthful, it's worth considering. This daytime moisturizer with sunscreen has an elegant, cream-lotion texture that provides broad spectrum protection, though we're a bit disappointed it stops at SPF 15 (see More Info for details). This is best for normal to combination skin; those whose combination skin is slightly dry will find this provides enough moisture, while oily areas of combination skin won't feel slick or greasy—and it's an option for breakout-prone skin, too!
Stabilized avobenzone is on hand for critical UVA (think anti-aging) screening, and it's joined by other tried-and-true active sunscreen ingredients. The fragrance-free formula has a silky texture that works well under makeup. It sets to a smooth, non-slippery satin-like finish that feels matte but leaves a subtle glow (from the combination of the natural sheen the sunscreen agents have). All in all, it's a modern-day texture that doesn't feel "sunscreen-y".
Beneficial ingredients beyond the sun protection include a mix of acetyl glucosamine + niacinamide, which may help fade dark spots, plus antioxidants to boost skin's environmental defenses. None of those ingredients are whiz-bang groundbreaking, but all have established benefit for skin.
The brightening portion comes into play because of the finely milled titanium dioxide this contains, though the effect is subtle. Those with dull skin tones will need more than this for a noticeable turnaround; see our top-rated AHA or BHA exfoliant list for treatments that can work wonders here!
In the end, this is another good product from Olay's growing Regenerist Luminous collection of products. You'll get broad spectrum sun protection, ingredients to help lighten dark spots and promote a more even skin tone, titanium dioxide for brightening, and proven antioxidants. Were it not for the SPF being 15 rather than 25 or greater, this would've earned our top rating.
Note: This product was recently downgraded from our top rating to three stars, which is considered good. The reason for the change is due to the prevailing recommendation that your daytime sun protection product be rated SPF 30 or greater. This revised recommendation is due to the fact that most people are not applying sunscreen liberally enough to earn the stated level of protection on the label; therefore, a higher SPF rating will be more advantageous. See the More Info section for additional details.
- Hydrates without feeling slick or greasy.
- Matte (in feel) finish will please those with oily skin.
- Provides broad spectrum sun protection.
- Contains ingredients (beyond sunscreen) that can help fade dark spots.
- SPF 15 is no longer the ideal minimum amount of protection to use.
Sunscreen Downgraded Due to Low SPF (SPF 15-20): This product was recently downgraded from its previous rating to two stars, which is still considered average. The reason for the change is due to the prevailing recommendation that your daytime sun protection product be rated SPF 30 or greater, with SPF ratings between 25 and 30 falling into the acceptable range.
This revised recommendation is because most do not apply sunscreen liberally enough to earn the stated level of protection on the label; therefore, a higher SPF rating will be more advantageous.
While this sunscreen will provide the SPF number on the label and has UVA-protecting ingredients, no sunscreen with an SPF lower than 20 will rate higher than two stars in Beautypedia. Applying an SPF 15-rated sunscreen under a foundation, tinted moisturizer, or BB cream that offers broad-spectrum SPF 25+ will take far better care of your skin. This layering approach ensures your skin gets sufficient sun protection even if you're not applying liberally.

Starting decades ago with the now-classic Oil of Olay, this brand now offers an extensive range of skin-care products sold at drugstores and mass-market stores. Today's Olay lineup for those concerned about staving off the effects of aging skin is impressive, comprising their Regenerist, Pro X, and Total Effects lines. All of these (and several other Olay products) contain the B vitamin niacinamide. As you might expect, the claims made for it are inflated, but niacinamide is a very helpful ingredient for all skin types, capable of exerting multiple benefits.
In fact, perhaps the biggest complaint about Olay is that there are a number of repetitive formulas within and between the sub-brands make this line confusing and tricky to shop! Still, there is a lot to like about this drugstore stalwart, with its main drawback being a few formulas containing fragrance or other ingredients that have the potential to cause irritation.
