Brand Overview

Regenerist Luminous Brightening Cream Cleanser doesn't contain any ingredients capable of brightening skin—but that's a nebulous term. What Olay may be alluding to is the appearance of skin that is moisturized (moisturized skin will look 'brighter'), and so a cleanser that is mild can help reach that goal. However, it's important to keep your expectations reasonable—a cleanser's job is to remove substances from the surface of skin without damaging or drying it out, not correct an uneven skin tone or double as a moisturizer.

All of that said, this is a good formula for dry to very dry skin that isn't prone to breakouts. A blend of water, emulsifiers, petrolatum and mineral oil, this cleanser is a relatively low-foam formula—but it isn't as greasy as you would expect. The Luminous Brightening Cream Cleanser is more akin to a cleansing lotion with a slightly granular texture (due to the polyethylene "microbeads" in the formula).

This cleanser should remove most types of makeup easily, as its petrolatum content can quickly cut through even waterproof formulas. The amount of sodium lauryl sulfate is not cause for concern, as it's likely well under 1% and even if used in a greater amount, the rich emollients may balance that out.

In the end, this cleanser isn't for everyone (very few are) but it's worth checking out if you have dry skin and prefer a creamier yet water-soluble formula. Just keep in mind that this cleanser won't do anything to improve brown spots or an uneven skin tone.

Pros:
  • Leaves skin moisturized.
  • Good option for dry to very dry skin types not prone to breakouts.
  • Removes makeup easily.
Cons:
  • Can't actually make skin more luminous or even-textured.

Olay At-A-Glance

Starting decades ago with the now-classic Oil of Olay, this brand now offers an extensive range of skin-care products sold at drugstores and mass-market stores. Today's Olay lineup for those concerned about staving off the effects of aging skin is impressive, comprising their Regenerist, Pro X, and Total Effects lines. All of these (and several other Olay products) contain the B vitamin niacinamide. As you might expect, the claims made for it are inflated, but niacinamide is a very helpful ingredient for all skin types, capable of exerting multiple benefits.

In fact, perhaps the biggest complaint about Olay is that there are a number of repetitive formulas within and between the sub-brands make this line confusing and tricky to shop! Still, there is a lot to like about this drugstore stalwart, with its main drawback being a few formulas containing fragrance or other ingredients that have the potential to cause irritation.
