Brand Overview

Redness Relieving Daily Facial Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20 Neutral Tint comes close to being a top-notch, affordable, fragrance-free daytime moisturizer but falls short on providing an adequate level of sun protection.

Although the mineral sunscreen agents deliver gentle, broad spectrum sun protection for sensitive skin, the SPF 20 rating is below the recommended minimum rating most regulatory and medical boards around the world agree is what's needed for your sole source of sun protection. (We explain why you should look for SPF 30 or greater in the More Info section.)

That's unfortunate considering there's otherwise a lot to love about this tinted moisturizer, including the way it sinks into skin for a lightly hydrating, non-greasy look and feel.

The soothing antioxidants are a nice addition to calm reddened skin, and we appreciate that the opaque pump packaging helps keep these delicate ingredients effective.

We also love that this moisturizer's neutral tint helps offset the telltale white cast of the sunscreen, while offering a hint of coverage to even out skin tone. The sheer color is workable on most light to deep skin tones, though it can read a tad too dark on fair skin.

With a higher SPF, this product would have easily earned our top rating!

Pros:
  • Gentle, fragrance-free formula + soothing antioxidants ideal for sensitive skin.
  • Neutral tint helps offset the telltale white cast of the sunscreen.
  • Lightly hydrating, non-greasy look and feel suitable for all skin types.
Cons:
  • SPF 20 falls short of the current medical board recommendation to use SPF 30 or greater.
  • Tint can read too dark on fair skin.
More Info:

An extensive body of research and a growing number of medical organizations around the world have determined that a sunscreen rated SPF 30 or greater is mandatory to ensure adequate sun protection.

Although a sunscreen rated lower than 30 will provide protection at the SPF number on the label and may claim broad-spectrum protection, we always point out when it does not have a rating of SPF 30 or greater because that's so important for the health and appearance of your skin.

Cetaphil At-A-Glance

This familiar, widely distributed skin-care collection is manufactured by Galderma, the same company that markets the prescription products Differin and MetroGel.Given the dermatology heritage of Galderma, it's surprising the Cetaphil line hasn't advanced beyond the basics. Yes, most of what's available is a safe bet for those with sensitive skin!

If you're in search of simplicity, this is a good line to consider. We should note that many of the formulas omit more complex anti-aging ingredients, but they can always be used alongside a serum or treatment of your choosing.

Strengths: Inexpensive; mostly fragrance-free products; affordable and widely available; offers complete ingredient lists on its website; the sunscreens offer sufficient UVA protection.

Weaknesses:A few formulas could be updated with more complex ingredients, but forgoing that there is a lot to like here.
