Brand Overview

If you're going to charge well over $300 for just shy of an ounce of serum, you'd better come up with not only a strong marketing story but fancy packaging, exotic ingredients, and lots of intriguing words like "rare", "secret", and "pure power". The irony? There's little about this "infusion" that's different from several less pricey products from Estee Lauder or its sister brand, Clinique. So before we go on, just know that this is a classic example of expensive (in this case, really expensive) not necessarily being better.

Let's begin with the packaging: It's gorgeous, a stunning platinum and gold-accented flacon with dual chambers said to house this allegedly powerful formula. Although the dispensing system indicates you're getting two "elixirs" (Lauder's word), the ingredient list shows this is just a single formula, seemingly housed in two chambers to perhaps reinforce the notion that you're getting something truly special. Either that, or one side dispenses the shine ingredients in a fluid base and the other dispenses the rest of the formula. Regardless, there is nothing extraordinary or powerful about this dispensing system—though for certain this type of packaging is great for keeping light- and air-sensitive ingredients stable.

What you're getting is a water-based serum laced with several ingredients that add a luminous shine to skin. That's a nice effect, but one you don't have to pay so dearly to get! The good news for those who choose to invest is that, like most Estee Lauder serums, this has a silky, hydrating texture, smooth, non-greasy finish and contains an impressive mix of antioxidants and water-binding agents. The not so good news was mentioned above: Pretty much all of this serum's most exciting, research-proven ingredients are found in other, less costly serums from Lauder and many other brands.

The hyped black diamond truffle extract (listed by its Latin name of Fuscoporia oblique) is beloved in foodie circles for its rich, earthy flavor and often pungent aroma (which isn't evident in this serum) but has zero research proving its worth for skin. For what this costs, you want solid, scientific research, not fabled storytelling of an exotic ingredient unearthed in the woods.

Knowing this, should you still consider this serum? On balance, it's a good formula, so if your budget allows and you're in the mood to splurge, go for it. But do so knowing that in no way, shape, or form is this a face-lift in a bottle. It cannot re-contour sagging skin by infusing it with energy from the fabled black diamond truffle. One ingredient is never the answer for skin, and no skincare ingredient, however good, can address the multiple factors that cause skin to sag and lose its shape. That's why the best approach to looking younger is a brilliant skincare routine coupled with cosmetic corrective or surgical procedures that pick up where skin care leaves off. This serum is fine for all skin types except sensitive, owing to the fragrance and small amount of fragrant plant extracts it contains. Also, the tiny amount of gold poses a slight risk of causing contact dermatitis.

  • Silky, hydrating texture feels wonderful.
  • Adds an immediate glow to skin.
  • Contains an impressive mix of antioxidants.
  • Water-binding and repairing ingredients leave skin smooth and healthier-looking.
  • Unrealistically overpriced.
  • Gold has no special benefit for skin but can cause dermatitis.
  • The best ingredients in this serum are found in less expensive Lauder products.

Many skin-care products claim they can firm and lift skin, but none of them work, at least not to the extent claimed. A face-lift-in-a-bottle isn't possible, but with the right mix of products, you will see firmer skin that has a more lifted appearance—and that's exciting! To gain these youthful benefits, you must protect your skin from any and all sun damage every day, use an AHA (glycolic acid or lactic acid) or BHA (salicylic acid) exfoliant, and use products that have a wide range of antioxidants and skin-repairing ingredients. Remember, no single product can do it all; it's the combination of products that has extensive research showing they can significantly improve many of the signs of aging, such as firming skin, reducing wrinkles and brown spots, and eliminating dullness. You'll find them on our list of Best Anti-Aging/Anti-Wrinkle Products.

Estee Lauder At-A-Glance

The history of Estee Lauder goes back to 1946, when the woman who created the brand (and for whom it is named) began selling creams and lotions made by her chemist uncle. From its humble beginnings, Estee Lauder has grown to become a multibillion-dollar company whose products are sold all over the world and advertised in just about every fashion and women's lifestyle magazine available.

The biggest compliment we can pay to the venerable Estee Lauder line is that their moisturizers and serums can largely be described as state-of-the-art. Though fragrance is often intrusive, but when it comes to formulary excellence culminating in products that give skin what it needs to function optimally, they are tough to beat.

When it comes to makeup, by and large the brand also exceeds expectations. Though there are some under-performing products (you can read more about them in our individual reviews), Lauder has a number of excellent options, most notably its lip colors.
