Brand Overview

Re-Nutriv Re-Creation Day Creme SPF 15 and Re-Creation Night Creme tries to justify its astonishingly high price by not only being a two-piece set, but also by showcasing the fact that these products are “endowed with tomorrow’s science, including eight U.S. and international patents pending.” Lauder’s idea of tomorrow’s science includes using “a wealth of rare plants and minerals known to create life, respond to natural stresses, and promote longevity.” That point deserves additional explanation, because it sounds amazingly helpful. It is true that countless plants have internal support systems that allow them to survive and, in many cases, thrive, despite constant exposure to the elements and sunlight, but that doesn’t translate to humans. The natural systems that a growing plant uses to sustain itself are built around antioxidants and other cellular ingredients responsible for defending a plant from environmental aggressors. Yet that process in a living plant doesn’t explain what happens when a portion of it is uprooted, extracted, and chemically treated to be mixed into a cosmetic product. The plant extracts used in the products below have antioxidant capability, but they cannot transfer their own life-sustaining benefits to your skin, so please don’t think that this Re-Nutriv duo is the antiwrinkle answer we’ve all been waiting for. Further, patents have nothing to do with proof of efficacy. Patent law is about establishing a unique ingredient or group of ingredients that can’t be used by anyone else. That doesn’t mean the ingredients work or have any purpose whatsoever; in a cosmetic, it is all marketing hype and legalese that has nothing to do with the well-being of your skin.

Turning to the products, Re-Nutriv Re-Creation Day Creme SPF 15 includes avobenzone for UVA protection and has a silky, lightweight cream texture suitable for normal to slightly dry skin. However, jar packaging spells an unstable future for the many antioxidants in this product (one more example of how antioxidants from plants are subject to deterioration when removed from their living source), which is a major misstep from a product costing $450. All you’ll be getting is an elegantly textured daytime moisturizer with sunscreen—and how liberally are you going to apply this product knowing its cost is equivalent to a monthly automobile payment? Re-Creation Night Creme is not only disappointing due to jar packaging, but also, for the money, it lacks many of the state-of-the-art ingredients found in dozens of other Lauder moisturizers. Talk about insulting a consumer’s intelligence! Yes, there are some unusual species of seaweed in this moisturizer, but the other antioxidants and cell-communicating ingredients are also found in other products that wouldn’t dare charge this much (and seaweed is not a cure-all for aging skin, nor is it an expensive ingredient to include in a product). In summation, this duo is more dour than dynamic, and won’t give skin of any age a new lease on life.

Estee Lauder At-A-Glance

The history of Estee Lauder goes back to 1946, when the woman who created the brand (and for whom it is named) began selling creams and lotions made by her chemist uncle. From its humble beginnings, Estee Lauder has grown to become a multibillion-dollar company whose products are sold all over the world and advertised in just about every fashion and women's lifestyle magazine available.

The biggest compliment we can pay to the venerable Estee Lauder line is that their moisturizers and serums can largely be described as state-of-the-art. Though fragrance is often intrusive, but when it comes to formulary excellence culminating in products that give skin what it needs to function optimally, they are tough to beat.

When it comes to makeup, by and large the brand also exceeds expectations. Though there are some under-performing products (you can read more about them in our individual reviews), Lauder has a number of excellent options, most notably its lip colors.
