Brand Overview

For the most part, this is a very good daytime moisturizer with sunscreen for those with normal to dry skin not prone to breakouts. Broad-spectrum sun protection is provided by the mineral sunscreens titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, but the lowered SPF rating (it used to be rated SPF 15) is disappointing. Otherwise, the base formula has a rich lotion texture that contains antioxidant plant oils.

The royal jelly is a gimmicky ingredient with more folklore than solid science behind it, and the witch hazel extract poses a slight risk of irritation, but that's a minor ding—the low SPF rating is of greater concern, as SPF 7 is below the recommended amount for sufficient daytime protection.

Because this contains fragrance, it's not ideal for sensitive skin; however, it does not contain fragrant ingredients known to be irritating. Note: As mentioned above, this product used to be labeled as SPF 15, but was changed to SPF 7 due to updated FDA regulations on sunscreen. The ingredient list has not changed.

Pros:
  • Provides gentle, broad-spectrum sun protection.
  • Emollient lotion texture improves dry skin.
  • Contains antioxidant-rich plant oils.
Cons:
  • Small amount of witch hazel extract poses a slight risk of irritation.
Jar Packaging: No
Tested on animals: No

Formulated with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide to provide broad-spectrum protection from the suns harmful rays, this day lotion can help reduce the risk of early skin aging and the development of fine lines and wrinkles associated with UVA/UVB exposure. It also has Calendula and Golden Seal Extracts to calm and soften, so youll get naturally radiant, younger looking skin.

Active: Titanium Dioxide (2.55%), Zinc Oxide (3.0%), Other: Water, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Glycerin, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Sucrose Distearate, Royal Jelly, Sucrose Stearate, Acacia Senegal Gum, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Extract, Hydrastis Canadensis (Golden Seal) Extract, Xanthan Gum, Lecithin, Citric Acid, Fragrance, Chlorphenesin, Phenoxyethanol

Strengths: Inexpensive.

Weaknesses: Many products have potent fragranced formulas; several formulas packaged in jars, which compromises their ingredients.

With humble beginnings in the town of Bangor, Maine, Burt's Bees is a brand focused on natural-themed, earth-friendly skincare. Unfortunately, in many cases, this also translates to less than beneficial formulas as not all of the natural ingredients used are helpful for skin.

Many of the plant extracts and oils used in these products, including orange oil, cinnamon oil, clove oil, lemon oil, eucalyptus oil, pine tar, alcohol, lime oil, and balsam peru, are problematic for skin and present a significant risk of irritation or a sensitizing reaction. Both the intriguing philosophy and inexpensive products are attractive, but it takes more than that to establish reliable products that are good for skin. Its also important to consider the potential benefit (or potential harm) of the ingredients used.

There are some formulas to consider among the brands offerings, but some to be wary ofsee our individual reviews on Burts Bees products for more details.
