Brand Overview

Pure Self Tan Foaming Water from Bondi Sands is one of the few fragrance-free self-tanners on the market, and we’re just getting started with the accolades! Not only is it gentle on skin, the weightless foam formula absorbs quickly (more on that below) and includes a handful of beneficial ingredients for extra credit. As with most self-tanners, there’s a slight learning curve to getting application just right, but once you get the hang of it, it’s incredibly easy to use!

Pure Self Tan Foaming Water comes in an opaque white squeeze bottle, which you’re instructed to tip upside down, and squeeze to turn the liquid formula into foam. Doing so dispenses the light-as-air foam directly onto skin. We found this format especially helpful for hard-to-reach areas like the back.

To blend, Bondi Sands suggests using their application mitt (sold separately, although it often comes free as a gift with purchase). We found the mitt worked great, but using your bare hands works just fine, too. The foam easily spreads across skin, reducing the potential for streaky lines. The quick dry down is another plus, minimizing the wait time before you can get dressed.

For those accustomed to self-tanning products that have a color guide, it’s worth noting Pure Self Tan Foaming Water doesn’t feature any dyes (for those who don’t know, color guides impart instant/temporary color so you can easily see where you’ve applied the self-tanner). However, we didn’t find that to be a hinderance considering how effortlessly and easily the formula blends.

In case you’re wondering which ingredients are responsible for the self-tanning effect, that’s due to the dihydroxyacetone and erythrulose (the latter of which helps prolong the tan color). We found the color began to develop a few hours after application and continued to deepen over the next 24 hours. The depth of color is noticeable with one application and is easily buildable, if richer color is desired. In our experience the tan color lasted for at least a few days (results will vary based on how often you exfoliate, shave, and other activities).

In terms of the other ingredients, Bondi Sands included vitamins C and E for antioxidant power, as well as hydration-boosting sodium hyaluronate (a form of hyaluronic acid). Skin is also treated to several conditioning agents. All of these are nice little extras to have.

As mentioned earlier, Pure Self Tan Foaming Water omits fragrance ingredients, which is best for the health of your skin. That said, some users will still notice a certain “self-tanner aroma” as the color develops, caused by the chemical reaction within skin that creates the tan effect. That is par for the course with sunless tanning agents in general. The odor varies depending on a person’s body chemistry, so not everyone experiences it to the same degree, or even at all. In our experience, the scent was subtle, not overpowering.

One last note: Bondi Sands recommends you avoid shaking product before use. According to their site: “When shaken, the product pre-foams in the bottle and liquifies upon squeezing onto the skin. If shaken, wait 5-10 minutes for the formula to settle before application.”

All things considered, Pure Self Tan Foaming Water has a lot of great things going for it, including a good-for-skin formula, easy-to-use format, and a noticeable sun kissed glow. Hats off to Bondi Sands for creating a “safe” tan!

Bondi Sands is an Australian beauty brand that launched in 2012, specializing in self-tanning products for the face and body. Named after one of Australia’s most popular beaches, Bondi Sands’ mission is to deliver a safe alternative to laying out in the sun with high quality formulas that impart a “naturally golden tan that hydrates and nourishes the skin.”

Currently, our reviews primarily focus on their PURE line, which features formulas that are free of fragrance ingredients (a true rarity when it comes to self-tanners!). While some of the PURE products fare better than others, we’re impressed by Bondi Sands’ inclusion of good-for-skin ingredients such as antioxidant-rich vitamins C and E, as well as hydrating hyaluronic acid.
