Brand Overview

Estee Lauder's Pure Color Envy Defining EyeShadow Wet/Dry promises "high-definition color in high-visibility finishes" and it delivers! This truly unique formula doesn't crease, flake, or fade— even after several hours of wear. Is it worth the splurge? Oh my, yes!

Opening up the slightly beveled plastic, mirrored compact reveals a pressed powder eyeshadow and super-tiny sponge tip applicator. The applicator may seem like a thoughtful touch, but its size makes it impractical to use. We recommend sticking with your preferred full size eyeshadow brush for much better results!

Pure Color Envy's fragrance-free formula has a wonderfully smooth, creamy-feeling texture that provides impressive color payoff and even application. It's easy to build intensity with this eyeshadow—but if you apply too much, the versatile formula blends readily for a softer result.

We don't quite agree with the brand's claims that this eyeshadow brings out the best properties of a cream, powder, and gel eyeshadow in one. That's because, at least in the case of gel and cream shadows, you can get visibly different results than what this Color Envy's formula can provide. That's not meant as a ding against Lauder's formula; rather, the claim slightly overstates what you can realistically expect. Lauder's formula doesn't have attributes of a gel eyeshadow, but its powder-like formula absolutely feels creamy—but most cream eyeshadows provide more opacity and impact than Color Envy does.

This eyeshadow is offered in four different finishes: Matte, Velvet, Luminous, and Brilliant. Not surprisingly, the Luminous and Brilliant shades have obvious shine, ranging from the soft-to-moderate shimmer of the Luminous finish to the all-out high-gleam shine that the Brilliant finish delivers, which most will find best for evening makeup. The Velvet shades offer a low-glow shimmer that is particularly attractive for daytime, while the Matte finish, while not 100% matte, comes pretty close with just a hint of finely-milled sparkles woven throughout.

As for the colors themselves, the range is mostly attractive and versatile. You won't find any odd or too-dramatic colors, though for some reason Lauder didn't offer any shades dark enough to use as eyeliner, at least if you want your liner color to be within the range of dark brown to black or dark gray. The majority of shades work best as crease or underbrow colors, and there's even some blue- and green-tinged shades for those who want more obvious color. Note that for any of the shades, wet application (which works beautifully) intensifies the color to a dramatic degree. Give it a try and see if you prefer the result!

Pure Color Envy Defining EyeShadow Wet/Dry is another outstanding powder eyeshadow from Estee Lauder. It could be considered pricey, yes, but worth the splurge for its exemplary texture, beautiful color payoff, and long, worry-free wear. The variety of finishes is well done and allows you to customize how much shine you get, while the formula performs equally well wet as it does when swept on dry.

  • Superbly smooth, highly blendable texture.
  • Powder-like formula doesn't flake during application.
  • Stays color-true all day; doesn't fade.
  • Available in four finishes and the overall shade range is great!
  • The included sponge tip applicator is a poor tool to apply any eyeshadow, not to mention its impractical size.

Estee Lauder At-A-Glance

The history of Estee Lauder goes back to 1946, when the woman who created the brand (and for whom it is named) began selling creams and lotions made by her chemist uncle. From its humble beginnings, Estee Lauder has grown to become a multibillion-dollar company whose products are sold all over the world and advertised in just about every fashion and women's lifestyle magazine available.

The biggest compliment we can pay to the venerable Estee Lauder line is that their moisturizers and serums can largely be described as state-of-the-art. Though fragrance is often intrusive, but when it comes to formulary excellence culminating in products that give skin what it needs to function optimally, they are tough to beat.

When it comes to makeup, by and large the brand also exceeds expectations. Though there are some under-performing products (you can read more about them in our individual reviews), Lauder has a number of excellent options, most notably its lip colors.
