Pro-X Even Skin Tone Anti-Oxidant Sunscreen Sheer Daily Moisturizer SPF 35
This lightweight daytime moisturizer (you can take the name literally- it really is sheer) with sunscreen isn't as exciting as it seems. The claims of protecting skin tone from further damage and offering antioxidant protection are true, but no more so than from lots of other sunscreens that provide broad spectrum protection and contain antioxidants, just like this one does.
Coming in at the higher end for drugstore skin care and given the pedigree Olay promotes for ProX, we were hoping to see a more state of the art formula rich in repairing and antioxidant ingredients. Instead, this daily moisturizer's lightweight texture's sole exciting ingredient (beyond the in-part avobenzone sunscreen, which ensures sufficient UVA protection) is vitamin E (tocopheryl acetate). Nice, but also kind of 'why bother', when this formula could've been so much more.
On the plus side, this has a lightweight texture those with normal to oily or combination skin will appreciate, and it's fragrance-free. The makings of a good daytime moisturizer are here; Olay just didn't go far enough—and for what this costs vs. what you get, the result can't help but be a bit disappointing.
- Provides broad spectrum sun protection in a lightweight, moisturizing base.
- Formula lacks an impressive mix of antioxidants and repairing ingredients that make for a great anti-aging moisturizer.
- Expensive given the relatively ho-hum formula whose main benefit (sun protection) is something hundreds of other products provide.
Olay Anti-Oxidant Sunscreen Sheer Daily Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 35 is the latest cutting-edge product in the Pro-X Tone regimen. Specifically designed to help prevent surface free radical damage, it helps protect the skin surface from harmful UV rays, while simultaneously helping prevent future skin tone damage.
Starting decades ago with the now-classic Oil of Olay, this brand now offers an extensive range of skin-care products sold at drugstores and mass-market stores. Today's Olay lineup for those concerned about staving off the effects of aging skin is impressive, comprising their Regenerist, Pro X, and Total Effects lines. All of these (and several other Olay products) contain the B vitamin niacinamide. As you might expect, the claims made for it are inflated, but niacinamide is a very helpful ingredient for all skin types, capable of exerting multiple benefits.
In fact, perhaps the biggest complaint about Olay is that there are a number of repetitive formulas within and between the sub-brands make this line confusing and tricky to shop! Still, there is a lot to like about this drugstore stalwart, with its main drawback being a few formulas containing fragrance or other ingredients that have the potential to cause irritation.
