Brand Overview

When you have oily skin, finding the ideal foundation is quite the challenge. If your skin is oily and sensitive and you're also struggling with breakouts, post-acne marks, and rosacea-related redness, the quest becomes even more daunting. Enter Power Play Foundation by Cover FX: a fragrance-free liquid makeup poised to become a favorite of the oily/problem skin crowd!

This somewhat thick liquid foundation is packaged in a plastic bottle topped with a needle-nose dispenser. The dispenser makes it easy to control how much foundation comes out, although some will find the bottle a bit difficult to squeeze (it's a hard, rigid plastic).

Cover FX promises full coverage from Power Play, and it delivers. In fact, a pea-sized dab of this foundation provides very impressive coverage, and you can layer it to build more coverage as needed.

This foundation's strong, long-wearing, transfer-resistant matte finish is best for those with oily to very oily skin. If you have combination skin you will absolutely want to prep the normal to dry areas with moisturizer prior to applying Power Play, or you will find it makes those areas feel progressively dry. The finish also magnifies the tiniest bit of dry skin—one more reason this is best for those with oily skin all over. Another plus for oily, clog-prone skin: the formula softens the appearance of enlarged pores and uneven texture.

Turning to the shades, wow! The entire range (comprising 40 colors) is beautiful and includes natural-looking options for very light to dark skin tones and seemingly every skin color in between. Really well done, and the lightest shades don't look chalky white, nor do the darkest shades look ashy-gray.

Although the positives outweigh the negatives, there are a couple of issues to consider before buying Power Play Foundation. The first is that this formula has minimal slip and dries quickly, so you have to blend quickly and precisely; softening mistakes isn't as easy as with most liquid foundations. This isn't a deal-breaker, just know that there's a steeper learning curve to applying this for best results.

The other issue is that this does not make good on its claim of all-day shine control. You'll enjoy several hours of shine-free results—longer than what most matte finish foundations provide—but the formula isn't impervious to eventual oil breakthrough, so keep the powder or blotting papers handy! On the upside, this foundation is highly unlikely to clog pores or make acne worse.

Note: The low amount of alcohol this foundation contains is not cause for concern.

  • Great coverage and long wear.

Cover FX At-A-Glance

Strengths: Broad range of foundation and concealer shades for those seeking moderate to full coverage; superior mineral powder foundation; good primer; most of the products are fragrance-free (but not all); very good brushes at an attractive price point.

Weaknesses: Lip balm/lipstick contains potential irritants; color range can be a little tricky for some of their products.

Co-founded by makeup artist Lee Graff and M.A.C. Cosmetic alumnis, Cover FX is a Canadian company specializing in camouflage makeup, the area of concentration in which Graff has focused her career as a makeup artist. According to the company Web site, Graffs dream was to help men and women with skin conditions face the world with confidence by offering them makeup products with therapeutic benefits that would perfectly match their skin tone, be affordable, well tolerated by even the most sensitive skin, and achieve a perfectly natural, flawless effect. Lofty goals, certainly! Cover FX manages to accomplish much of these with a line that has grown and been well curated over the years.

Many of the options within Cover FX offer medium to full coverage, but whenever serious camouflage is needed, there is a trade-off to accept that it wont always look totally natural. To their credit, Cover FX's full coverage options look more natural on skin than many (and their expansive color options helps quite a bit).

If you don't need full coverage, there are several other products from Cover FX worth considering, from their Cream Concealer, Priming Serum to their Skin Tint, Custom Cover Drops and makeup brushes. This isn't a comprehensive makeup line (for example, you won't find eyeshadows, pencils, or mascara), but they are a cosmetics line that understands what it does bestand sticks with it.

Cover FX has an admirable goal in wanting to help people who have scars or discolorations face the world with their head held high. Without question, the right makeup can make a huge difference in such a persons self-esteem, and as Cover FX has evolved over the years, theyve launched impressive and unique formulas. There are a few that need work due to their use of potentially irritating ingredientsbut fortunately, these are few and far between.
