Brand Overview

This liquid foundation blends into the skin with ease, providing light-to-medium coverage with a natural finish as it sets. Wearing this foundation won't result in dramatically "poreless-looking" skin (at least not any more than a regular foundation would), but POREfection Foundation does temporarily leave the skin smoothed and evened out, as any good foundation should do. Unfortunately, the effect is short-lived because the coverage begins to fade within a couple hours, and those with oily skin will notice their shine breaks through rather quickly. As such, we recommend this foundation only for normal to dry skin types.

We're ecstatic that Lorac included broad-spectrum sun protection with an in-part avobenzone formula to protect your skin from aging sun damage. We're less thrilled, however, that this foundation is housed in a clear bottle because that means the light-sensitive ingredients, like the highly touted "anti-aging antioxidants of Vitamins A & E, Olive Leaf Extract," won't remain effective (unless the bottle is stored somewhere that protects it from exposure to light).

On another note: Although this foundation is labeled "fragrance-free," it actually isn't. The lemon fruit extract it contains has a fragrant component that can potentially cause irritation. In the tiny amount present here, it really isn't a concern, but we are obligated to point it out, especially given that the bottle states otherwise.

By the way, if you do happen to notice that your skin is sensitive to this formula, particularly around the eye area, the synthetic sunscreen actives may be to blame. It won't be a problem for everyone, but is something to be aware of. We generally prefer titanium dioxide– or zinc oxide–based foundations and concealers for use around the eye area.

This foundation also contains papaya extract, which can exacerbate the sensitizing effect, although the small amount included here isn't too worrisome.

Considering the short wear and the potential formulary issues, POREfection Foundation lands itself in the middle of the road. Still, if you're curious, the foundation comes in complexion-enhancing shades for light to deep skin tones. The only one to watch out for is PR4 Light Medium, which carries a slight pinkish undertone that is less flattering, but the rest have a neutral tone.

  • Easy-to-blend liquid texture.
  • Light-to-medium coverage with a natural finish.
  • Complexion-enhancing shades for light to deep skin tones.
  • Anti-aging benefit with broad-spectrum SPF 20.
  • Not a long-wearing formula.
  • Clear bottle packaging compromises the antioxidants in the formula.
  • Not 100% fragrance-free as it states on the bottle.
  • Combination of synthetic sunscreen + potential irritants could be sensitizing on the skin.

Lorac At-A-Glance

Strengths: Mostly great foundations in a neutral shade range; beautiful pressed powder and bronzing powder; several super blush and lipstick options; one superior lip gloss; awesome collection of shimmer products.

Weaknesses: Limited, average skin-care options; average to problematic concealers; unimpressive eyelining and brow-enhancing options; the Lotsa Lip products; the mascaras are a mixed bag with mostly disappointing results; no brushes.

This Los Angelesbased independent cosmetics company launched in 1990 and is the brainchild of makeup artist Carol Shaw (Lorac is "Carol" spelled backwards). It is well-publicized that Shaw has a long list of celebrity clients, but then so do all of the other makeup artists who have their own products linesthere are a lot of famous faces that need attentionso that boast is hardly unique. Compared to competitors Bobbi Brown, Trish McEvoy, or Stila, Lorac doesn't offer the same caliber of foundation colors or the array of products, yet most of what's available is impressive. The company holds its own when it comes to blush, eyeshadow, and lipstick. You will find that, for the most part, the older, established products perform better and are more attractive than many of Shaw's latest inventions. In particular, the latest lipstick, lip gloss, concealer, and waterproof mascara are true disappointments. Lorac hasn't done a great job on the innovation and performance side of the business since the last edition of this book, while her competition (particularly Stila and Laura Mercier) continues to consistently impress. There are still plenty of reasons to shop this line, but focus on the long-standing products rather than on what's new.
