Brand Overview

Estee Lauder is back in the retinol game with Perfectionist Pro Rapid Renewal Retinol Treatment, a smart, sleekly-packaged but fragrant way to give skin the many benefits of this proven anti-aging ingredient.

This silky treatment’s impressively lightweight cream texture is dispensed via pump from its opaque container. Such packaging protects the delicate ingredients (which include retinol) from air and light.

Applied to skin, you’ll see an instant, non-shimmering glow and experience a comfortable feeling of lasting hydration. The texture plus main ingredients like dimethicone, shea butter, and a triglyceride make this best for normal to dry skin (although if you have dry skin you’ll still want to follow with moisturizer).

Alongside retinol are several other anti-aging ingredients including several types of hydrating, soothing algae, borage oil, cholesterol, antioxidant vitamins, and a peptide. It’s a great mix for enhanced results, although we wish Lauder had been forthcoming about how much retinol you’re getting like many other brands do. We suspect it’s between 0.1-0.5%, a range which would definitely be effective on wrinkles, skin tone, and loss of firmness.

For the money, this can make good on its wrinkle-smoothing, skin tone-improving, and texture-smoothing claims. It can help with fading dark spots, too, but most people struggling with this concern will also want to use a skin-lightening product with hydroquinone, arbutin, or high amounts of niacinamide and vitamin C (all are worthwhile options).

Lauder makes note of its time-released system for retinol, and while that’s great, the technology isn’t unique to Lauder. But between this delivery system and the soothing quality of several ingredients, this is bound to be a retinol product most people can readily tolerate.

The only issue that keeps this from earning our top rating is the inclusion of fragrance. Perfectionist Pro Rapid Renewal Retinol Treatment’s scent is on the stronger side, which ups the ante in terms of irritating skin. Given that some people have issues acclimating to retinol use, adding fragrance just complicates matters.

There’s a lot to love about this product, but you’ll find gentler, highly effective retinol treatments on our list of best retinol products.

Estee Lauder At-A-Glance

The history of Estee Lauder goes back to 1946, when the woman who created the brand (and for whom it is named) began selling creams and lotions made by her chemist uncle. From its humble beginnings, Estee Lauder has grown to become a multibillion-dollar company whose products are sold all over the world and advertised in just about every fashion and women's lifestyle magazine available.

The biggest compliment we can pay to the venerable Estee Lauder line is that their moisturizers and serums can largely be described as state-of-the-art. Though fragrance is often intrusive, but when it comes to formulary excellence culminating in products that give skin what it needs to function optimally, they are tough to beat.

When it comes to makeup, by and large the brand also exceeds expectations. Though there are some under-performing products (you can read more about them in our individual reviews), Lauder has a number of excellent options, most notably its lip colors.
