Brand Overview

Estee Lauder’s Perfectionist Pro Multi-Defense UV Fluid Broad Spectrum SPF 45 & Anti-Oxidants has considerably more good traits than bad but doesn’t quite live up to Lauder’s claim of “next-generation” sunscreen. Still, it’s a worthwhile daytime moisturizer for normal to dry or combination skin.

Housed in an opaque bottle outfitted with a needle-nose dispenser, this “shake before use” daytime moisturizer provides gentle, mineral-based broad spectrum sun protection thanks to its blend of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.

The fluid, fragrance-free formula is a silky hydrating lotion that’s easy to blend, enlivening skin with a subtle pink glow. It sets to a satin finish that works well under makeup, but you’re better off applying makeup over it, because the pink glow has a trade-off…

As much as the sheer pinkness enlivens dull skin, it also has the opposite effect because there’s enough of a whitish cast that skin can look drained even with the pink glow. The effect isn’t terrible, but it’s noticeable even if you have fair skin (and definitely more so on darker skin tones).

Back to the positives: Perfectionist Pro Multi-Defense UV Fluid contains an impressive mix of pollution-fighting antioxidants, including tiger lily, green tea, and ergothioneine, an amino acid with antioxidant benefit.

Having lots of antioxidants on skin is great for daytime defense, but we’re disappointed the formula lacks a robust mix of proven replenishing and restoring ingredients. However, it does contain the salt form of hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate) and emollient squalane.

Despite those additions, this formula doesn’t contain enough “barrier fortifiers” to support Lauder’s claim, unless they’re referring to the silicones (chiefly dimethicone), in which case “advanced” is a strong overstatement!

Adding it all up, if you’re willing to apply makeup over this, we suspect you’ll find this lightweight formula is easy to apply, doesn’t feel greasy, and nicely sets skin up for strong environmental defense.

Pros:
  • Provides gentle, broad spectrum protection.
  • Silky, hydrating lotion texture is easy to blend.
  • Enlivens skin with a subtle pink glow.
  • Impressive mix of antioxidants.
  • Works well under makeup.
  • Fragrance free.
Cons:
  • Lacks a great mix of proven replenishing and restoring ingredients.
  • The pink glow is also white-ish and can make skin look “drained”.

Estee Lauder At-A-Glance

The history of Estee Lauder goes back to 1946, when the woman who created the brand (and for whom it is named) began selling creams and lotions made by her chemist uncle. From its humble beginnings, Estee Lauder has grown to become a multibillion-dollar company whose products are sold all over the world and advertised in just about every fashion and women's lifestyle magazine available.

The biggest compliment we can pay to the venerable Estee Lauder line is that their moisturizers and serums can largely be described as state-of-the-art. Though fragrance is often intrusive, but when it comes to formulary excellence culminating in products that give skin what it needs to function optimally, they are tough to beat.

When it comes to makeup, by and large the brand also exceeds expectations. Though there are some under-performing products (you can read more about them in our individual reviews), Lauder has a number of excellent options, most notably its lip colors.
