Brand Overview

Despite slightly different claims, Olay Sun Facial Sunscreen + Antioxidants + Shine Control Broad Spectrum SPF 35 Lotion is nearly identical to the brand’s Sun Facial Sunscreen + Antioxidants + Makeup Primer Broad Spectrum SPF 35 Lotion. Both work well under makeup and provide reliable broad-spectrum sun protection.

Does this one provide shine control? Yes, just like the Makeup Primer version, this one absorbs oil thanks to the tapioca starch featured predominantly in its formula. Once this sets, it feels matte but looks somewhat shiny due to the natural sheen of the sunscreen actives (which can be diminished if you set with powder). Because of this, Olay’s “all day shine control” claim isn’t accurate.

The light, whipped lotion texture is a cinch to apply, feeling wonderfully light (you might just look forward to applying this daily). Just like with the Primer version, skin is treated to a mix of antioxidants including niacinamide, green tea, and vitamin E. We would’ve liked to see some skin-restoring ingredients and more on the replenishing side, but what’s here is by no means terrible.

The one drawback is the slight amount of fragrance this contains, but at least it doesn’t linger. Still, it poses a slight risk of irritating skin; no question fragrance-free is the better way to go.

  • Provides broad-spectrum sun protection.
  • Sets to a non-drying matte finish that works well under makeup.
  • Contains niacinamide, green tea, and vitamin E.
  • Subtle fragrance poses a slight risk of irritating skin.
  • The finish feels matte but looks shiny, so the all-day shine-free claim falls flat.

What if protecting skin with SPF didn't mean settling for a greasy, oily feel? What if looking younger didn't mean relying on makeup or a really thorough scrub? What if the SPF number on the bottle was the exact protection you were promised? Better yet, what if wearing SPF wasn't like wearing SPF at all? Olay Sun Face Sunscreen Serum + Shine Control with SPF 35 protection - an innovative solution that delivers all of the above and more. Olay At-A-Glance

Starting decades ago with the now-classic Oil of Olay, this brand now offers an extensive range of skin-care products sold at drugstores and mass-market stores. Today's Olay lineup for those concerned about staving off the effects of aging skin is impressive, comprising their Regenerist, Pro X, and Total Effects lines. All of these (and several other Olay products) contain the B vitamin niacinamide. As you might expect, the claims made for it are inflated, but niacinamide is a very helpful ingredient for all skin types, capable of exerting multiple benefits.

In fact, perhaps the biggest complaint about Olay is that there are a number of repetitive formulas within and between the sub-brands make this line confusing and tricky to shop! Still, there is a lot to like about this drugstore stalwart, with its main drawback being a few formulas containing fragrance or other ingredients that have the potential to cause irritation.
