Brand Overview

Olay’s Clay Stick Pore Detox is an intriguing concept: an absorbent clay mask in a convenient stick form. However, while it certainly has some good qualities, its drawbacks don’t make this a mask to rush out and buy.

Packaged in a clear plastic tube that lets you twist the solid stick from the base (be sure to remove the thin disc cap covering the mask itself), the swiveled-up stick glides over skin. True to claim, it’s masking without the mess—there’s no denying the convenience factor here.

The mask contains absorbent clay (kaolin) along with charcoal powder and these work to absorb oil and minimize the look of pores within the 10 minutes you’re supposed to leave this on skin—although this benefit applies to other oil-absorbing masks that don’t have this one’s problems.

Speaking of problems, we weren’t happy that this leaves a waxy-feeling film on skin after you rinse. Plus, this takes a lot of effort to remove, more so than many other masks we’ve tried.

In use, this tends to make skin feel constricted as it dries, not a good sign as that indicates a formula that can be too absorbent, unless you have very oily skin. Contrary to claim, none of this is a sign skin (or pores) is being deep-cleaned. This doesn’t go deeper than other clay masks.

The last issue is that the fragrance this contains. It’s fairly strong, and even though this is a rinse-off product it can still pose a risk of irritating skin.

In the end, we’re left with a product whose clever execution is, unfortunately, not matched by a great formula.

Pros:
  • Glide-on stick is super-easy to apply.
  • Convenient and mess-free.
  • Absorbs excess oil and minimizes large pores.
Cons:
  • Leaves a waxy-feeling film on skin.
  • The clay and charcoal blend take a lot of effort to rinse.
  • Highly fragrant formula poses a risk of irritating skin.
  • Tends to make skin feel constricted as it dries.

Olay At-A-Glance

Starting decades ago with the now-classic Oil of Olay, this brand now offers an extensive range of skin-care products sold at drugstores and mass-market stores. Today's Olay lineup for those concerned about staving off the effects of aging skin is impressive, comprising their Regenerist, Pro X, and Total Effects lines. All of these (and several other Olay products) contain the B vitamin niacinamide. As you might expect, the claims made for it are inflated, but niacinamide is a very helpful ingredient for all skin types, capable of exerting multiple benefits.

In fact, perhaps the biggest complaint about Olay is that there are a number of repetitive formulas within and between the sub-brands make this line confusing and tricky to shop! Still, there is a lot to like about this drugstore stalwart, with its main drawback being a few formulas containing fragrance or other ingredients that have the potential to cause irritation.
