Brand Overview

Kat Von D claims this eyeshadow palette was inspired by the colorful wings of a monarch butterfly, and we have to say both the butterfly and this palette are things of natural beauty!

This large palette contains 12 different shadows, packaged in an interesting way: at the top are three neutral "base" shades which are larger than the rest; underneath each base shade are three brighter "accent" shades. The idea is that the palette contains three pre-built eye designs you can use (one for each base shade and its three accent shades), though you certainly can mix and match (and we did!). The texture, like those of all Kat von D's eyeshadow palettes, is buttery smooth and creamy, and the finishes include a mix of matte, pearl, and shimmer options. The color quality is good, and the shadows are all easy to blend. They wear well for several hours without creasing or fading, and the colors are very pretty and work well in a variety of combinations. (We were especially surprised by Wrath, a shade which looks bright orange in the pan, but goes on as an attractive burnt copper color.)

One thing to note: the shimmery gold color included, called "Summerfly," can have some fallout as the day wears on. You can fix this by using primer underneath, or applying it wet, but it's something to keep in mind. Otherwise, this is another winner from a brand that knows its palettes!

Pros:
  • Smooth, buttery texture that's easy to blend.
  • Strong color quality.
  • Shadows wear well without creasing or fading.
  • Attractive colors that work well in a variety of combinations.
Cons:
  • Gold "Summerfly" shade can have some fallout throughout the day.

Kat Von D At-A-Glance

Celebrity makeup lines are nothing newweve seen dozens of them over the yearsbut this one is a first in that it shocked us a bit. Kat Von Ds main claim to fame was her successful tattooing enterprise, and her role as a former reality TV show star. Now, she's a makeup entrepreneurand a very good one.

The line launched in 2007 with only two eyeshadow palettes, cream lipstick, and eyeliner, but since has expanded by adding several new products, including remarkable lip products, blushes and more. Just like most makeup lines, this is one to shop carefully; for every great product, there are a few that could use improvement.

All Kat Von D makeup products come packaged with the lines signature images of roses and thorns (perhaps to reinforce Von Ds love of tattoo design), which definitely makes these products stand out among a sea of blandly packaged makeup containers.

Strengths: Excellent eyeshadow palettes and trios; long-wearing cream and liquid lipstick; truly lasting powder blushes and bronzers.

Weaknesses: A few products on the pricey side (this is a minor quibble).
