Moisture Renew Lipstick
Moisture Renew Lipstick lives up to its hydration-inspired name with a slick, creamy texture and moist-shine finish. The promised color payoff isn't lipservice on Rimmel's part— you can count on richly saturated color from just one swipe! Unfortunately, the tradeoff for such "moisture-intense color" is the propensity for it to transfer and feather into lines around the lips. Additionally the noticeable fragrance detracts from the formula. Still, there's no denying that this lipstick has some lovable qualities despite its caveats… at a heart-warming price, no less.
As for the claims that Moisture Renew Lipstick "reduces lip dryness by up to 65% with vitamins A, C, and E" that's an overzealous statement considering those ingredients are included in trace amounts, and really, it's finish is owed to the emollients in this formula—the fatty acids and waxes present—not to the tiny amounts of antioxidants this contains. More importantly, the fact that this lipstick is fragranced strongly enough to linger is an indicator that it can potentially cause irritation, which in fact, may worsen dry lips in the end (see More Info for these details).
What about the shades? Rimmel did a noteworthy job of offering a wide gamut of saturated colors. There are several to choose from and even some of the softer shades we tested went on with impressive burst of opaque, rich pigment. The deeper/bolder shades leave a stain of color to extend beyond the normal couple of hours of wear.
Note: The darkly colored cap makes it impossible to gauge the true color while you're shopping in-store and the swatch of color on the sticker isn't always indicative of the hue either—that's one of the downsides of shopping for makeup at the drugstore. But, we digress…
In the end, Moisture Renew Lipstick's mixture of great and not-so-great qualities landed it a middle-of-the-road rating. You can find superior options on our Best Lipsticks list (but we won't hold it against you if you decide to jump on board and experiment with this bargain-friendly lipstick).
- Packs on rich color in one swipe and comes in a wide variety of shades.
- Creamy texture offers a moisturizing, smooth feel throughout wear.
- Deeper/bolder shades leave a stain for longer lasting color.
- Slick finish allows the color to transfer/feather more easily.
- Strongly fragranced formula can potentially cause irritation.
Daily use of products that contain a high amount of fragrance, whether the fragrant ingredients are synthetic or natural, causes chronic irritation that can damage healthy collagen production, lead to or worsen dryness, and impair your skin's ability to heal. Fragrance-free is the best way for all skin types to go for all skin types (Food and Chemical Toxicology, 2008 & American Journal of Clinical Dermatology, 2003).
The sneaky part about irritation is that research has demonstrated that you don't always need to see it or feel it for your skin to suffer damage, and that damage may remain hidden for a long time (Skin Pharmacology and Physiology, 2008).
In fact, the effect of inflammation in the skin is cumulative, and repeated exposure to irritants contributes to a weakened skin barrier, slower healing (including of red marks from breakouts), and a dull, uneven complexion (Aging, 2012 & Chemical Immunology and Allergy, 2012).
Strengths: Inexpensively priced; a great pressed bronzing powder; several impressive mascaras; a collection of praiseworthy of lip color products including gloss and lipstick; a couple of good foundations.
Weaknesses: Not the most user-friendly packaging; lackluster skincare-esque products; some gimmicky makeup items that turn out to be duds.
Rimmel is a London-based company, under the ownership of Coty Inc. since 1996 (Coty also owns other cosmetic lines such as philosophy and Sally Hansen). A self-proclaimed edgy cosmetics line thats all about experimentation and setting trends, not following them, Rimmel livens things up with a mix of trendy and classic shade options and new product launches at a rapid pace.
While not all of Rimmels products are an absolute hit, there are some individual standout items (see top-rated reviews) that can compete with the best of whats out thereat rock bottom prices no less. A few of their lip color products deserve special mention for their elegant texture and fashion-forward colors.
Where Rimmel falls into hit-or-miss territory is with its excessive collection of mascaras (it seems as though they launch a new one every month) which makes it confusing to try to figure out which one is the best. Some are impressive and absolutely worth buying, while others are gimmicky duds. Lucky for you, weve put them rigorous testing so you can make an informed decision! Oh, what our lashes go through so you avoid frustration and wasting money!
Rimmel also dabbles in a smidgen of skincare-esque products that claim to go above and beyond the norm. For various reasons mentioned within the individual reviews, these products tend to fall short of being worthwhile purchases, even at their bargain-friendly price point. Overall, while Rimmel has some misses, they earn our praise for several good to excellent makeup items at nearly unbeatable prices. Sort by three-star and four-star rating under this brand to find the best of what Rimmel has to offer!
Note: Many Rimmel products featured on their Web site are not available in the United States; they are exclusive to United Kingdom drugstores. The products reviewed below are those that are consistently found at U.S. stores nationwide, specifically Target, Walgreens and Wal-Mart.
