Modernist Eyeshadow Palette
Hourglass certainly knows what it's doing when it comes to product packaging! The Modernist series of palettes is gorgeous: Each contains five powder shadow colors arranged in a wave-like pattern that looks like sand art in a sleek, attractive compact. But does a pretty palette equal pretty performance? Unfortunately in this case, the answer is no!
The main issue is the sparkly metallic shade included in almost every palette (save for the Atmosphere palette, whose shades are a mix of matte and satin matte finishes). Whether or not sparkle is your goal, no one wants a poorly performing shadow—the Modernist's sparkle formula flakes throughout the day, leaving you with noticeable flecks of shadow on the tops of your cheekbones and under your eyes by the time you're ready to remove your makeup.
Hourglass is correct when it says these shadows are incredibly soft. They have a buttery, almost cream-like texture that's easy to pick up on your brush, and the color quality is strong. But blendability is a problem with all of these shadows regardless of their finish.
The blending issue is particularly true of the darker shades in each palette, which tend to cling unevenly to the areas where you apply them, leading to a blotchy look. You can blend them with a light, fluffy brush, but it takes some work! Once blended, these shadows last about seven hours without fading.
All the palettes feature mostly neutral colors and attractive shade combinations. For all the hype though, this is just an average product due to the issues with blending and flaking. You'll find much better options (both in single and palette form) on our list of Best Eyeshadows.

Hourglass Cosmetics bills itself as luxury performance makeup, and for the most part that description is apt. The luxury aspect is apparent in the brand's packaging, which evokes sophistication and glamour. As for what's inside, while not every Hourglass product is a blockbuster, it has a number of strong products in its lineup, particularly its Ambient Lighting collection of powder makeup products. There are also some standout options for lip colors, and its Veil Fluid Makeup Oil SPF 15 foundation is a blogger and Beautypedia favorite for good reason (you can find out exactly why in our individual review). Hourglass does offer a small selection of skincare, but when it comes to this brand makeup is truly where its strengths lie.
