Mist Ultimate Hydration Essence Cooling with Cucumber Water & White Mint
Olay’s Mist Ultimate Hydration Essence Cooling with Cucumber Water & White Mint promises to “transport your senses and your mind,” but does that translate to good skin? In this case, no. The formula is mix of good and bad as we’ll reveal below.
In terms of the misting action itself, Mist Ultimate Hydration Essence Cooling does an excellent job of delivering a fine veil of hydration that lightly sprinkles skin rather than drenching it. That’s especially handy if you’re planning to apply this over makeup as a refresher (it doesn’t disturb foundation and helps smooth creased areas).
We’re also happy to see a good amount of niacinamide in the formula. Niacinamide offers a host of benefits for skin including minimizing enlarged pores, adding hydration, and even fighting off wrinkles. The cucumber extract is another welcome addition for its antioxidant properties, as is the glycerin as a skin-replenishing ingredient.
But things go downhill from there thanks to ingredients like peppermint and orange extracts, plus other irritating forms of fragrance that deliver a lovely smell but can wreak havoc on skin (see More Info to learn why).
If you decide to try Mist Ultimate Hydration Essence Cooling regardless, store the frosted bottle in a dark place (i.e. a drawer or cabinet) to ensure its light-sensitive ingredients can deliver their maximum benefit. Better yet, save your skin the trouble and check out our top-rated face mists instead.
- Contains beneficial niacinamide, glycerin and cucumber extract.
- Fine mist pleasantly settles on skin and works well over makeup.
- Easy to use for a midday refresh.
- Fragrance ingredients, including peppermint extract, put skin at risk of irritation.

Starting decades ago with the now-classic Oil of Olay, this brand now offers an extensive range of skin-care products sold at drugstores and mass-market stores. Today's Olay lineup for those concerned about staving off the effects of aging skin is impressive, comprising their Regenerist, Pro X, and Total Effects lines. All of these (and several other Olay products) contain the B vitamin niacinamide. As you might expect, the claims made for it are inflated, but niacinamide is a very helpful ingredient for all skin types, capable of exerting multiple benefits.
In fact, perhaps the biggest complaint about Olay is that there are a number of repetitive formulas within and between the sub-brands make this line confusing and tricky to shop! Still, there is a lot to like about this drugstore stalwart, with its main drawback being a few formulas containing fragrance or other ingredients that have the potential to cause irritation.
