Micro Essence Skin Activating Treatment Lotion
First, just to be clear, "essence" is simply another word to describe a toner. Of course, because "essence" sounds more concentrated and unique, products bearing this name tend to cost a lot more than "regular" toners, which is true for this Lauder product. Although the alcohol- and fragrance-free formula contains some intriguing ingredients, they don't add up to a product worth investing in, primarily because there are many less expensive options on our list of Best Toners.
This liquid contains a rather standard mix of slip agents and some novel water-binding, potentially barrier-repairing ingredients including bifid a ferment lysate, a type of friendly bacteria, and some anti-irritants. Micro Essence Skin Activating Treatment Lotion is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive, and would also be very good for breakout-prone skin, as it could stand in as a liquid hydrator for those who find even thin lotions tend to make their breakouts worse. But again, you don't have to pay this much for such a product.
Micro Essence Skin Activating Treatment Lotion missed our top rating due to its unimpressive mix of antioxidants and lower amount of proven skin-repairing ingredients. It's certainly a far better formula than most toners (and quite a few essences, as many of those are alcohol-based) but if you're already using a well-formulated toner, we wouldn't advise switching to this.
- Alcohol- and fragrance-free.
- Hydrates without a greasy feel.
- Infuses skin with novel and standard water-binding agents.
- Labeling this "groundbreaking" is going too far.
- Lacks a robust mix of antioxidants and repairing ingredients compared to today's best toners.
A groundbreaking essence-in-lotion that activates and strengthens skins foundation to reveal a youthful-looking glow.
Estee Lauder At-A-Glance
The history of Estee Lauder goes back to 1946, when the woman who created the brand (and for whom it is named) began selling creams and lotions made by her chemist uncle. From its humble beginnings, Estee Lauder has grown to become a multibillion-dollar company whose products are sold all over the world and advertised in just about every fashion and women's lifestyle magazine available.
The biggest compliment we can pay to the venerable Estee Lauder line is that their moisturizers and serums can largely be described as state-of-the-art. Though fragrance is often intrusive, but when it comes to formulary excellence culminating in products that give skin what it needs to function optimally, they are tough to beat.
When it comes to makeup, by and large the brand also exceeds expectations. Though there are some under-performing products (you can read more about them in our individual reviews), Lauder has a number of excellent options, most notably its lip colors.
