Brand Overview

It’s great to see more daytime moisturizers with sunscreen in men’s skin care lines, but Gold Bond’s Men’s Essentials Five-in-One Face Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 15 falls short in the sun protection department.

We’re not disputing that this provides protection; rather, we take issue with the low SPF rating, as medical boards around the world are now advising SPF 30 as the preferred rating for everyone, year-round.

SPF disappointment aside, this fragrance-free moisturizer does a great job moisturizing skin without feeling greasy. It’s perfect for men with normal to dry skin—but note that if you prefer not to feel your moisturizer (as most people do), this one’s finish remains tactile on skin, even hours later.

The formula contains an interesting mix of antioxidants and soothing ingredients, both welcome additions to any moisturizer, plus it’s inexpensive and generously sized. If only the SPF rating were 30 or greater! But as is, no question this is a step above most men’s moisturizers, and we’d rather see a guy slather on SPF 15 than skip daily sunscreen altogether.

Pros:
  • Provides broad spectrum protection.
  • Highly moisturizing formula without being greasy.
  • Interesting mix of antioxidants and soothing ingredients.
  • Inexpensive + generously sized.
  • Fragrance free.
Cons:
  • Not for a man who doesn’t want to “feel” his skincare.
  • SPF 15 is below the worldwide recommended SPF 30 rating.
Jar Packaging: No
Tested on animals: No

Gold Bond At-A-Glance

Gold Bond is a staple at drugstores due to their small selection of body lotions, anti-itch products, and various foot-care products. Though there are a number of Gold Bond products containing the potent irritant menthol (particularly its foot care and "medicated" products), in recent years Gold Bond has taken great strides and now offers some impressive moisturizers that are fairly priced, too.
