Brand Overview

Peter Thomas Roth's Max Sheer All Day Moisture Lotion Defense SPF 30 has been reformulated for the better, at least in terms of its broad-spectrum sun protection. It now contains a higher amount of stabilized avobenzone for enhanced UVA screening. That's nice, but this still remains a good-but-not-great option for normal to dry skin.

Why not great? Despite a creamy, hydrating lotion texture that's easy to apply (although it does require a couple minutes of blending), the formula contains what looks to be a lower-than-usual (but still likely effective) amount of antioxidants and replenishing ingredients. For the money, you should be getting a bit more here. Try layering it with an antioxidant-spiked serum for enhanced environmental defense.

We love that this is fragrance free and it works well under makeup, but it still falls short of competing favorably with today's best daytime moisturizers with sunscreen.

  • Provides broad-spectrum sun protection.
  • Hydrates.
  • Works well under makeup.
  • Fragrance free.
  • Could be better with more antioxidants and anti-aging replenishing ingredients.
  • Takes more time than usual to blend.
Jar Packaging: No
Tested on animals: Yes

An ultra-light, anti-aging (due to sunscreen ingredients) hydrator with moisturizers, ceramides, soothing Aloe Vera and broad spectrum SPF 30 protection. Oil and fragrance-free with Vitamins C and E and Pro Vitamin B5.

Peter Thomas Roth At-A-Glance

Peter Thomas Roth is a large but straightforward line with mostly uncomplicated formulations that, for the most part, are quite good and state-of-the-art. Unlike many product lines, most of the acne, AHA, BHA, sunscreen, and moisturizing products contain what they should to be effective and helpful for skin.

Even more impressive are the well-formulated cleansers, sunscreens, AHA products, and skin brighteners. The moisturizers have improved somewhat, and most are now packaged so that the light- and air-sensitive ingredients remain stable. In fact, Roth's packaging deserves special mention because it is exceptionally utilitarian.

After all that glowing praise, what you should be aware of are the instances of products containing potential irritants (noted in their respective reviews) as well as the products in jar packaging that contain ingredients which are sensitive to air and light.
