Brand Overview

NYX products typically impress us in both performance and price, but their Matte Finish Setting Spray disappoints. The fragrance-free, matte finish formula does help to keep makeup from fading or streaking, but that’s because it’s essentially hairspray for your face!

Although oily skin does best with a shine-free finish, Matte Finish Setting Spray isn’t great for any skin type. It produces a somewhat wet, forceful mist that’s tricky to apply evenly. Areas that get a bigger “dose” of this spray will feel sticky when it dries. Meanwhile, the areas that got a fine, sheer mist will feel better BUT sheer amounts of this don’t work as well to keep makeup in place for worry-free wear.

As for the hairspray comment above, the film-forming ingredient VP/VA copolymer is found in many hairsprays, as is denatured alcohol. Just as they help hold your hairstyle in place, they can help makeup stay in place, but how well this works varies based on how much you apply, the type of makeup you wear, the humidity where you are, and your skin type. No single setting spray can adapt to meet all those needs, which is why so few of them do a decent job.

Rather than deal with the unpleasant trade-offs this formula presents, check out the best makeup setting sprays, none of which contain the potentially irritating denatured alcohol found in Matte Finish Setting Spray.

  • Fragrance free.
  • Helps keep makeup from fading or streaking.
  • The formula is essentially hairspray for your face.
  • Sets to a sticky-feeling finish unless applied very sparingly (in which case it doesn’t work to set makeup).
  • Tricky to apply evenly.
  • Amount of alcohol is potentially irritating.

Smashbox At-A-Glance

This small Los Angelesbased makeup line was founded in 1999 by a woman named Toni Ko. The company's Web site is vague about Ko's background, merely stating that she developed an interest in cosmetics as a teenager and wanted to create her own line of cosmetics. Ko's goal was to produce high-quality products at affordable prices, and that's the draw of NYX (pronounced "nicks") Cosmetics. We are pleased to report that, for the most part, Ko succeeded in her childhood dream.

It is important to note that this line offers a full selection of makeup products, from foundations to lip gloss. However, the only place to access everything NYX Cosmetics has to offer is their Web site. The Ulta chain is the largest distributor of NYX Cosmetics products in the United States, and the line can also be found at Target and Nordstrom Rack, but they carry a smaller selection of NYX products. The good news is that most of the few NYX products Ulta stocks are impressive, especially the powder eyeshadows, which compete evenly with eyeshadows that cost a lot more.
