Lock-It Featherweight Primer
Lock-It Featherweight Primer has merit as an option for those who dislike the aesthetics of silicone-based primers, which most are (or have silicones among their main ingredients). It's not that silicones are bad ingredients for skin, but some prefer water or gel-based textures for a variety of reasons. If that's you, Lock-It Featherweight Primer is worth a look!
This fragrance-free primer has a moisturizing lotion-like finish on skin, and is built around derivatives of shea butter and jojoba. Due to those qualities, this is better suited towards those who have combination to dry skin, as any especially oily areas won't fare as well under this formula. It has a smooth, fluid texture that works well as primer and works well to help your foundation, whether powder or liquid/cream-based, blend easier on skin.
Though this claimed to help smooth the appearance of pores, its effect here was quite subtle. We did note this has a somewhat neutral, medicinal scent due to the ingredients it contains, but we'll take that over added perfumes or other potential irritants any day.
Lock-It Featherweight Primer is one of the few choices on the market that isn't silicone based (a factor that may or may not matter to you), and it does work to provide a smoother canvas for your makeup. If you've found your foundation doesn't always blend well or easily (and your sunscreen isn't doing the job as a pre-makeup prep on its own), then this is worth checking out.
- Lightweight lotion texture works well under makeup.
- The "pore smoothing" claim is much more subtle than we had hoped.
Kat Von D At-A-Glance
Celebrity makeup lines are nothing newweve seen dozens of them over the yearsbut this one is a first in that it shocked us a bit. Kat Von Ds main claim to fame was her successful tattooing enterprise, and her role as a former reality TV show star. Now, she's a makeup entrepreneurand a very good one.
The line launched in 2007 with only two eyeshadow palettes, cream lipstick, and eyeliner, but since has expanded by adding several new products, including remarkable lip products, blushes and more. Just like most makeup lines, this is one to shop carefully; for every great product, there are a few that could use improvement.
All Kat Von D makeup products come packaged with the lines signature images of roses and thorns (perhaps to reinforce Von Ds love of tattoo design), which definitely makes these products stand out among a sea of blandly packaged makeup containers.
Strengths: Excellent eyeshadow palettes and trios; long-wearing cream and liquid lipstick; truly lasting powder blushes and bronzers.
Weaknesses: A few products on the pricey side (this is a minor quibble).
