Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick
NYX's Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick comes with claims of plush matte color in a creamy liquid formula. This sounds great, especially for people who avoid matte products because of their potential to be drying! While this product definitely has some positive aspects going for it, its overall performance is lackluster, which is why it earns an average rating.
Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick comes in a standard lipgloss-type tube with a wand applicator. Inside is a fragrance-free liquid lipstick that, true to its claims, is remarkably creamy, yet at the same time lightweight. The formula glides across lips with ease, imparting vibrant color in just a few swipes. Unlike some other matte formulas, this doesn't dry down immediately, instead taking a couple of minutes to "set." Once it does, it becomes truly matte without any shine.
The problems with Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick start to show up a couple of hours into its wear time, though. While it isn't drying, it does settle into lip lines, making them very apparent. (In fact, you might notice lines you didn't know you had!) It also begins to flake after a few hours of wear, with pieces of lipstick coming off in chunks, particularly towards the inside of the mouth. It does leave a stain, but because of the flaking it is uneven.
Were it not for these performance flaws, this would easily have earned a better rating. As it is, though, NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick doesn't get a big thumbs up from us. We recommend instead one of the options on our list of Best Lip Paints/Stains.
- Formula feels creamy yet lightweight.
- Vibrant color in just a couple of swipes.
- Dries to a truly matte finish.
- Settles into fine lines, making them more apparent.
- Formula begins to flake on lips after a few hours.
This small Los Angelesbased makeup line was founded in 1999 by a woman named Toni Ko. The company's Web site is vague about Ko's background, merely stating that she developed an interest in cosmetics as a teenager and wanted to create her own line of cosmetics. Ko's goal was to produce high-quality products at affordable prices, and that's the draw of NYX (pronounced "nicks") Cosmetics. We are pleased to report that, for the most part, Ko succeeded in her childhood dream.
It is important to note that this line offers a full selection of makeup products, from foundations to lip gloss. However, the only place to access everything NYX Cosmetics has to offer is their Web site. The Ulta chain is the largest distributor of NYX Cosmetics products in the United States, and the line can also be found at Target and Nordstrom Rack, but they carry a smaller selection of NYX products. The good news is that most of the few NYX products Ulta stocks are impressive, especially the powder eyeshadows, which compete evenly with eyeshadows that cost a lot more.
