Brand Overview

Charlotte Tilbury's Lip Magic comes with a number of lofty claims about its "hi-tech formula" and "magical natural ingredients." While this product does have some very good things going for it, the drawbacks outweigh its potential benefits. The inclusion of a not-so-good ingredient, plus its packaging issues, earned it an average, two-star rating.

Lip Magic is a lip balm housed in a small plastic pot with a screw-top lid. The balm itself, while in solid form initially, quickly warms up to a much softer texture that's easy to spread across lips. There's certainly a lot to like about the formula, which includes a number of beneficial non-fragrant emollients to condition and protect lips. Shea butter, vegetable oil, jojoba seed oil, and argan oil are all present, just to name a few! There's even some hyaluronic acid included, which has the ability to help skin retain moisture. All of these ingredients are excellent for treating dry lips and assisting in repairing skin's barrier.

As for the propolis extract that's advertised as this product's key ingredient, while there are some studies suggesting it might have some anti-inflammatory benefits, it is the second-to-last ingredient listed, meaning you are getting very little of it.

As far as this working as a lip base as claimed, it works fine in that regard, though no better than most other lip balms. You'll still have to let Lip Magic sink in to your lips for a few minutes before applying lipstick, as the formula is too emollient to apply lipstick directly over without reducing your lipstick's wear time.

The real problems with this formula, though, are apparent as soon as you open up the package. This balm has a strong floral-honey fragrance that lingers. Even hours after we applied the product, we could still smell and taste its fragrance (to the point where we had to remove it). This is the result of added perfume, not the natural ingredients of the formula. Fragrance can also be a potential irritant, so using this on a daily basis could be an issue for those with sensitive skin.

Then there's the fact that this balm is packaged in a jar. While there is only a small amount of antioxidants included, so that's not much of an issue, it is still not the most hygienic way to package a lip balm. Even if you use a lip brush instead of your fingers to apply this, there's still the potential that you will be introducing bacteria into the product.

Overall, Lip Magic isn't as mystical as it might seem, and due to its drawbacks—primarily the overwhelming added fragrance— is only an average product that we can't recommend with much enthusiasm. For the cost, there are far better formulas available—we suggest checking out one of these superior alternatives on our list of Best Lip Products.

Meet my breakthrough anti-ageing balm for a dewy, younger-looking pout. Its hi-tech formula combines magical natural ingredients to create a powerful moisture-sealing, protective barrier plus long-term lip healing benefits. Testing found Lip Magic to have an unparalleled ability to not only protect the skin, but to strengthen the creation of new cells, while reducing water loss by 34 per cent. The result is baby-soft, smooth, pert lips lines are reduced, while dryness and chapping are soothed. Lip Magic also creates a nourished base thats perfect for lipstick. Unlike other balms, it actually works with your lipstick, whether matte or cream, for a perfect application and sustained colour. The key ingredient is Propolis a resinous elixir created by honeybees to protect the lining of the beehive with magical healing powers. It can be used to treat ailments from sore throats to cold sores, and to boost the immune system.

Charlotte Tilbury At-A-Glance

Charlotte Tilbury's journey into creating her own makeup line began back in her teen years when she discovered the transformative power of makeup. Fast-forward several years and celebrity clients later, Tilbury made a name for herself as a makeup artist who epitomized the glamorous beauty of the supermodel era in the 90s. Along the way, she became a consultant for beauty brands, and eventually decided to create her own line of makeup and select skincare products in 2013.

One of the strong suits of Charlotte Tilburys makeup is her take on color. The woman knows her way around flattering a complexion and making features pop, and you can see that in her shade range. That doesn't mean you wont find some misses along the way, but as a whole, the line offers an impressive selection of color.

Tilbury's skincare, on the other hand, doesn't fare quite as well. Between the use of jar packaging and some highly fragranced formulas, skin is left compromised (see individual reviews for details).

In no small way Tilbury's years of painting beautiful faces has helped shape what her makeup line is today. If you don't mind the $$$ factor, it's worth taking a look at the standouts which earn our highest rating.

Strengths: Excellent color selection; natural-looking foundation and concealer.

Weaknesses: The iconic Magic Cream comes in a jar; some highly fragranced formulas.
