Lip Cheat Lip Liner
Charlotte Tilbury's Lip Cheat Lip Liner delivers on its promise to glide effortlessly over lips with a velvety, rich texture that stays put. More to love, it comes in a gorgeous array of colors to complement a wide range of lip colors and lipstick shades (including Tilbury's own K.I.S.S.I.N.G Lipsticks). Our only complaint is that we wish it came with a self-sharpening/retractable design for added convenience, especially given the high price point for such a basic product. Still, there's no denying that Lip Cheat functions fantastically well as a long-wear lip liner!
By the way, if you're wondering what the "cheat" part of this lip liners name is all about, it's in reference to Tilbury's tip to "cheat and balance the lip shape and size by drawing over the outer edge of your natural lip line." That certainly can help give lips a fuller appearance and this pencil's matte finish is tenacious enough to stay in place wherever you put it; just be careful to not overdo it or it can end up looking sloppy instead of sexy.
We love that Lip Cheat has a substantial enough texture to help prevent lip color from feathering, yet it goes on smoothly—no skipping or tugging. Lip Cheat also held up beautifully in our waterproof test, and when applied all over lips, it creates a strong base for lipstick to adhere to and last longer.
Lip Cheat Lip Liner's fragrance-free formula is an excellent option for anyone looking for a lip liner that can go the distance. The only thing holding it back from our highest rating is the inconvenience of manual sharpening and that it doesn't include one for you in the product packaging. Given it's cost and the fact that today's best lip liners in all price points are either self-sharpening or include a sharpener, we feel it's a shortcoming that you shouldn't need to deal with.
- Velvety rich texture glides on smoothlyno skipping or tugging.
- Tenacious, waterproof, matte finish wears well throughout the day.
- Versatile shade range to complement a wide variety of lip colors and lipstick shades.
- Requires added inconvenience of manual sharpening (and doesn't come with a tool to do so), which is especially problematic for a liner at this price point.
Charlotte Tilbury At-A-Glance
Charlotte Tilbury's journey into creating her own makeup line began back in her teen years when she discovered the transformative power of makeup. Fast-forward several years and celebrity clients later, Tilbury made a name for herself as a makeup artist who epitomized the glamorous beauty of the supermodel era in the 90s. Along the way, she became a consultant for beauty brands, and eventually decided to create her own line of makeup and select skincare products in 2013.
One of the strong suits of Charlotte Tilburys makeup is her take on color. The woman knows her way around flattering a complexion and making features pop, and you can see that in her shade range. That doesn't mean you wont find some misses along the way, but as a whole, the line offers an impressive selection of color.
Tilbury's skincare, on the other hand, doesn't fare quite as well. Between the use of jar packaging and some highly fragranced formulas, skin is left compromised (see individual reviews for details).
In no small way Tilbury's years of painting beautiful faces has helped shape what her makeup line is today. If you don't mind the $$$ factor, it's worth taking a look at the standouts which earn our highest rating.
Strengths: Excellent color selection; natural-looking foundation and concealer.
Weaknesses: The iconic Magic Cream comes in a jar; some highly fragranced formulas.
