Light Wonder Youth-Boosting Perfect Skin Foundation
Charlotte Tilbury's Light Wonder Youth-Boosting Perfect Skin Foundation won't give you a flawless complexion, but it's a beautiful option for light, natural-looking coverage that sets to a moisturizing finish. Ideal for those with normal to dry skin, this is also an option for those with combination skin who prefer a dewy complexion—those with overall oily skin, on the other hand, will likely find the finish too moisturizing.
Housed in a transparent plastic squeeze tube with a needle-spout, this formula has a faint fragrance that is almost imperceptible. Most will find it a non-issue, but it is worth noting for those seeking to avoid fragrance in any amount.
Charlotte Tilbury claims this foundation is air-light, and that it "illuminates, smoothes, hydrates, minimizes pores and reduces wrinkles for perfect skin." We'll give the brand the benefit of the doubt that they're not conveying this can actually treat your wrinkles or uneven texture, but rather than it is simply capable of improving the appearance of skin and not settling into lines or pores. To that effect, the marketing is certainly accurate.
This super-fluid formula blends seamlessly into skin—whether you are using your fingers, a sponge like the BeautyBlender or a brush, this is a very easy formula to work with. As mentioned above, you can expect a light amount of coverage that is just enough to conceal minor discolorations. It doesn't build well, so you'll still need your favorite concealer to use over any prominent imperfections.
The fact that it has a relatively light degree of coverage and a moisturizing finish—thanks to a few added emollients—aids its ability to resist settling into fine lines or wrinkles. Though it does contain mica, there is no visible shimmer (not even in daylight conditions).
In terms of wear time, Light Wonder Youth-Boosting Perfect Skin Foundation will last the workday for those with normal to dry skin. Those with combination skin will likely find some blotting necessary by mid-day, but this formula won't settle or separate and works well under any other powder or cream makeup.
At the time of this review, the Charlotte Tilbury brand offers nine shades, with options for the very fair to medium-deep skin tones. As the formula is on the light coverage side, the colors are more forgiving and overall quite neutral (shades 6-9 do run on the warmer side in undertone, but not unnaturally so).
A note on the price. Though this initially seems like a more expensive formula compared to others on the market, closer inspection actually reveals it is on par, if not slightly less expensive than others as the product fill weight is higher for Charlotte Tilbury's Light Wonder. At $45 for 1.4 fl. oz., this works out to be about $32 per ounce. Compare this to the average from brands like Urban Decay, Make Up For Ever or NARS, of which the average price for foundations is in closer to $40 per ounce (or more). (That's not exactly inexpensive, but it's not on the high end, either!)
Light Wonder Youth-Boosting Perfect Skin Foundation is among the few choices for those seeking a moisturizing foundation—so many formulas in this category tend to feel heavy, look cakey or otherwise problematic to work with. This exceptional choice is absolutely worth consideration if you're in the market for such a foundation.[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKgWFVfQFio&w=420&h=315]
- Natural-looking, dewy radiant finish.
- Pleasant aesthetics, resists settling into pores or lines.
- Mostly neutral shade range with options for very fair to medium-deep skin tones.
- Faint amount of fragrance (not problematic for most).
Charlotte Tilbury At-A-Glance
Charlotte Tilbury's journey into creating her own makeup line began back in her teen years when she discovered the transformative power of makeup. Fast-forward several years and celebrity clients later, Tilbury made a name for herself as a makeup artist who epitomized the glamorous beauty of the supermodel era in the 90s. Along the way, she became a consultant for beauty brands, and eventually decided to create her own line of makeup and select skincare products in 2013.
One of the strong suits of Charlotte Tilburys makeup is her take on color. The woman knows her way around flattering a complexion and making features pop, and you can see that in her shade range. That doesn't mean you wont find some misses along the way, but as a whole, the line offers an impressive selection of color.
Tilbury's skincare, on the other hand, doesn't fare quite as well. Between the use of jar packaging and some highly fragranced formulas, skin is left compromised (see individual reviews for details).
In no small way Tilbury's years of painting beautiful faces has helped shape what her makeup line is today. If you don't mind the $$$ factor, it's worth taking a look at the standouts which earn our highest rating.
Strengths: Excellent color selection; natural-looking foundation and concealer.
Weaknesses: The iconic Magic Cream comes in a jar; some highly fragranced formulas.
