Brand Overview

Irish Moor Mud Purifying Cleansing Gel comes with some lofty claims, but at its core, it's a very good water-soluble gel cleanser for normal to oily or combination skin, including breakout-prone skin.

The attention-getting claims center around the charcoal (volcanic ash), seaweed, and Irish Moor mud (peat), which are said to purge pores of impurities, detoxify skin, and protect skin from damage. All such claims fall into the realm of fantasy; this is just a cleanser, and while charcoal can help absorb excess oil and potentially leave skin feeling cleaner, it cannot purge or detoxify, and the same goes for any type or age of mud and type of seaweed. If clogged pores are your concern, you'll need more than this cleanser to improve matters, not to mention clogged pores have nothing to do with toxins. See More Info to find out why skincare products cannot detoxify your skin.

What we love about this cleanser and why it earned a strong rating is due to its gentle mix of cleansing and lather ingredients. The gel formula rinses easily and removes makeup with minimal effort, all without leaving skin feeling tight or dry.

In terms of nose appeal, the only fragrance in this cleanser comes from the tea tree oil it contains. If you're not a fan of this ingredient's medicinal scent, don't worry. It's very subtle; in fact, we found it quite tolerable and almost akin to using a fragrance-free cleanser.

If you can overlook (or not get too caught up in) the hype about this cleanser's storied ingredients working their magic on skin, Irish Moor Mud Purifying Cleansing Gel is worth an audition. No, you don't need to spend this much money for a great cleanser, but if you're a fan of Peter Thomas Roth and have normal to oily skin, we suspect you'll be happy you tried this one!

Note: The charcoal powder in this cleanser gives it its inky black color. You may find, as we did, that the color stained our white sink if any cleanser that didn't make it down the drain isn't thoroughly rinsed from the sink.

  • Lightly-lathering gel formula feels refreshing and rinses clean.
  • Removes makeup, including eye makeup, with minimal effort.
  • Doesn't leave skin feeling tight or dry.
  • Minimally fragranced (the scent of tea tree oil is barely detectable).
  • This cleanser's inky black color can stain a light-colored sink if not immediately wiped up.
  • Cannot unclog pores or detoxify skin.

Why Beauty Products Can't Detoxify Your Skin: Despite the claims of many a cosmetics company, you cannot "detox" your skin. In fact, brands making this claim never specify which substances their product supposedly banishes—which makes sense, as your skin isn't capable of storing any sort of toxin. An actual toxin is a poison, and we're talking REAL poisons, such as those produced by plants, animals, insects, ¬or reptiles (think snake venom or bee stings) or other organisms.

So-called toxins cannot leave your body through the pores or through your skin, whether via sweat or other means—they're filtered, broken down, and removed by the kidneys and liver. Heavy metal toxicity, for example, can't be "sweated" or otherwise drawn out of skin; this requires medical treatment to remove them from the body.

Regardless of the skin concern you're battling, "toxins" aren't to blame—and if you're serious about wanting results, stick to what the research says really works (and ignore fantasy claims about "detoxifying" cosmetic products).

Peter Thomas Roth At-A-Glance

Peter Thomas Roth is a large but straightforward line with mostly uncomplicated formulations that, for the most part, are quite good and state-of-the-art. Unlike many product lines, most of the acne, AHA, BHA, sunscreen, and moisturizing products contain what they should to be effective and helpful for skin.

Even more impressive are the well-formulated cleansers, sunscreens, AHA products, and skin brighteners. The moisturizers have improved somewhat, and most are now packaged so that the light- and air-sensitive ingredients remain stable. In fact, Roth's packaging deserves special mention because it is exceptionally utilitarian.

After all that glowing praise, what you should be aware of are the instances of products containing potential irritants (noted in their respective reviews) as well as the products in jar packaging that contain ingredients which are sensitive to air and light.
