Intensive Skin Serum Corrector
Bobbi Brown's Intensive Skin Serum Corrector is a much more modern take on the concept of color correction—one that we found easier to use and more natural looking than the brands' original Corrector. Though we wouldn't say such formulas are necessary for everyone, they can have a dramatic impact when worn as a base for your undereye concealer, "boosting" its coverage on particularly severe dark circles.
Housed in a tube with a sponge-tipped wand applicator, this sheer, fluid formula blends easily and, on its own, provides light coverage + a brightened appearance to the undereye area. (In fact, its brightening effect may be enough for those with minor dark circles.) Its satin finish remains flexible on skin, a quality that makes it an ideal base for your concealer. Just like Brown's Intensive Skin Serum Concealer, it avoids settling into fine lines around the eye area.
Beyond its function as a color corrector, Intensive Skin Serum Corrector also claims to provide skincare benefits via its added antioxidants and reparative ingredients. We were relieved to see this wasn't all talk, as Bobbi Brown included a comprehensive array of beneficial antioxidants and anti-irritants such as licorice and coffee extracts, lecithin and several others.
Also present is the interesting ingredient Cordyceps sinensis extract, which is a fungus that's related to the mushroom family. It has some research showing physiological benefits in mice, but none as of yet (that we could locate) concerning people's skin, topically or otherwise (Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, 2009). There's a peptide, vitamin C (as magnesium ascorbyl phosphate) and sodium hyaluronate, too. (All of these ingredients are also in Brown's Intensive Skin Serum Concealer.)
When worn on its own, the corrector provided a natural-looking, brightened effect that held up for most of the workday without creasing (likely due to its sheer texture). Used with undereye concealer, we found we needed far less concealer than usual.
Bobbi Brown offers this in an impressive collection of shades—16 colors—from the ultra-fair "Porcelain Bisque" to the "Very Deep Bisque," so most will be able to find a suitable match among the range. Despite the undertones of peach or pink, these are far more natural looking than you might expect. One word of advice: We strongly encourage you to try this in-store to get the best shade match—you will almost certainly select the wrong color if shopping online (the undertones vary and as a whole, the shade options tend to run darker than they appear).
Bobbi Brown's Intensive Skin Serum Corrector is an excellent product for those who find they must pile on concealer to cover their severe dark circles. This versatile product also works well on its own as a "brightener" for the undereye area for those lucky few without such concerns. A major improvement over the brands' original Corrector, this earns our top rating for its performance, exceptional shade range, and inclusion of several beneficial ingredients.
- Provides a natural-looking, brightening effect on the undereye area.
- "Boosts" the effects of concealer for those with severe dark circles.
- Excellent range of shades, with options for those with very fair to deep skin tones.
- Inclusion of multiple beneficial antioxidants and reparative ingredients.
- Fragrance free.
Bobbi Brown At-A-Glance
Strengths: A good cleanser and eye makeup removers; some impressive foundations, with options for all skin types and preferences; very good blushes and eyeshadows (powder and cream); several top-notch mascaras; mostly excellent brushes.
Weaknesses: Multiple moisturizers in jar packaging, otherwise great products hindered with irritating fragrant oils or fragrance components.
It all began with lipsticks. In 1991, New York based makeup artist Bobbi Brown debuted a collection of ten lipsticks at Bergdorf Goodman, expecting to sell about one hundred units in a month. She sold more than that the first day. From there, it's been mostly success after success, as Brown launched her classic foundation stick, wrote her first book, Bobbi Brown Beauty The Ultimate Beauty Resource, and enjoyed continued attention as an in-demand makeup artist and beauty educator.
Today, Bobbi Brown's makeup that continues to excel with superior foundations, true matte blushes and eyeshadows, and with all of the other basics that are essential to anyones makeup wardrobe. It isn't the least bit surprising that this makeup collection continues to do so well, because for many it's one-stop shopping that combines classic makeup application techniques with enough fun-yet-functional products to keep customer's interest piqued season to season.
Turning to the skincare collection, there are a few excellent formulas, but unfortunately, many are packaged in a jar, which means their beneficial ingredients are rendered useless due to air exposure (and bacterial contamination from spatulas or fingers). In addition, some suffer from the inclusion of potent fragrant essential oils. Those that should be avoided are noted in their respective reviews. That aside, color is without a doubt Bobbi Brown's strong pointbut you will find a few sleeper hits among the selection of skincare products.
