Intensive Skin Serum Concealer
Expanding on their original Creamy Concealer, Bobbi Brown's Intensive Skin Serum Concealer is a much more modern—and impressive—formula that is marketed specifically for the undereye area. Though it can be used anywhere on the face, it's particularly ideal for concealing dark circles. What's more, the formula is suitable for any skin type (including those with dry, sensitive skin around the eye area).
Housed in a tube with a sponge-tipped wand applicator, this lightweight, fluid formula blends easily and provides a natural-looking light to medium coverage. Similar to Brown's Intensive Skin Serum Corrector, its satin finish remains flexible on skin, a quality that helps prevent this from settling into lines around the eye area.
While the strength of this formula lies in its impressive compatibility with the eye area, it can also be used to conceal discolorations or redness on the face. However, as it doesn't set to a matte finish, it won't hold up as well when used to conceal blemishes—especially if you have oily to very oily skin.
Beyond its function as a concealer, Intensive Skin Serum Concealer also promises some skincare benefit from the added antioxidants and reparative ingredients included. As you know, we take that kind of talk seriously around these parts, and we were happy to see that Bobbi Brown included a serious variety of beneficial antioxidants and anti-irritants such as licorice and coffee extracts, lecithin and several others. Now that's putting your money where your mouth is—it definitely got us smiling!
Also present is the interesting ingredient Cordyceps sinensis extract, which is a fungus that's related to the mushroom family. It has some research showing physiological benefits in mice, but none as of yet (that we could locate) concerning people's skin, topically or otherwise (Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, 2009). There's a peptide, vitamin C (as magnesium ascorbyl phosphate) and sodium hyaluronate, too.
This held up well past lunch, though we did find that some touch up was needed after about five to six hours of wear if this wasn't set with a dusting of loose (or pressed) powder. We're talking minor creasing, and it was nothing that a bit of blending couldn't fix.
As is true of nearly every complexion product Bobbi Brown launches, the shade range is excellent. 15 shades are offered at the time of this review, from the ultra-fair "Porcelain" to the medium-deep "Warm Honey". Note that at the time of this review, this was three shades shy of the range offered for their Creamy Concealer, but those missing ("Golden," "Almond" and "Chestnut") are now available online (and we've heard reports from our readers of seeing them in Nordstrom as well).
Bobbi Brown's Intensive Skin Serum Concealer is a superb choice for those seeking an undereye concealer that manages to be both moisturizing and lightweight. A considerable improvement over their Creamy Concealer, this earns our top rating for its performance, natural-looking coverage, exceptional shade range, and inclusion of several beneficial ingredients. It's pricey, but it certainly works hard for the money.
- Natural-looking, medium coverage.
- Excellent range of shades, with options for those with very fair to medium-deep skin tones.
- Inclusion of multiple beneficial antioxidants and reparative ingredients.
Bobbi Brown At-A-Glance
Strengths: A good cleanser and eye makeup removers; some impressive foundations, with options for all skin types and preferences; very good blushes and eyeshadows (powder and cream); several top-notch mascaras; mostly excellent brushes.
Weaknesses: Multiple moisturizers in jar packaging, otherwise great products hindered with irritating fragrant oils or fragrance components.
It all began with lipsticks. In 1991, New York based makeup artist Bobbi Brown debuted a collection of ten lipsticks at Bergdorf Goodman, expecting to sell about one hundred units in a month. She sold more than that the first day. From there, it's been mostly success after success, as Brown launched her classic foundation stick, wrote her first book, Bobbi Brown Beauty The Ultimate Beauty Resource, and enjoyed continued attention as an in-demand makeup artist and beauty educator.
Today, Bobbi Brown's makeup that continues to excel with superior foundations, true matte blushes and eyeshadows, and with all of the other basics that are essential to anyone's makeup wardrobe. It isn't the least bit surprising that this makeup collection continues to do so well, because for many it's one-stop shopping that combines classic makeup application techniques with enough fun-yet-functional products to keep customer's interest piqued season to season.
Turning to the skincare collection, there are a few excellent formulas, but unfortunately, many are packaged in a jar, which means their beneficial ingredients are rendered useless due to air exposure (and bacterial contamination from spatulas or fingers). In addition, some suffer from the inclusion of potent fragrant essential oils. Those that should be avoided are noted in their respective reviews. That aside, color is without a doubt Bobbi Brown's strong point, but you will find a few sleeper hits among the selection of skincare products.
