Insta-Matte Lipstick Transformer
Given the rising popularity of matte lipsticks, Smashbox's Insta-Matte Lipstick Transformer is a timely product that presents an interesting way to transform your favorite creamy lip colors. How, you ask? You just pat the colorless, silicone-laden formula over your cream lipstick to give it a velvety matte finish. It works, though we wouldn't quite describe the results as being on par with our favorite matte lipsticks. Here's why…
As you dab Insta-Matte Lipstick Transformer over your cream lipstick, the cushiony, texture goes to work blurring down the creamy shine to a soft matte finish. The tricky thing is it never fully sets. In some ways, that's nice because it allows a smooth, pliable layer between lips so you can comfortably press them together for the duration of wear…but it also allows this product to wear off lips more easily, which means you're not going to get the longevity of a true matte lipstick.
Based on the claims, we were also hopeful that Insta-Matte Lipstick Transformer would prevent lip color from feathering, but unfortunately, it doesn't help much there. We must also note that with the different lipsticks we tested with this product, we occasionally experienced a bit of pilling and slight dryness as it wore off.
So who should buy Insta-Matte Lipstick Transformer? According to Smashbox, this product was, "Created on set to minimize the number of lipsticks Smashbox's pro artists carried in their kits." Yes, makeup artists may find this "tool" helpful, but anyone who owns creamy lipsticks that they'd like to transform into a matte finish can use it, and in that capacity it lives up to its name, allowing two finishes from one lipstick.
The bottom line: We landed on a middle of the road rating for Smashbox's Insta-Matte Lipstick Transformer. Its fragrance-free formula's ability to mattify creamy lipstick is unique, we just wish it would have enhanced the performance and length of wear as claimed.
Note: Smashbox clearly states this is not intended for use with glosses, lacquers, or balms.
- Gives creamy lipstick a velvety matte finish as claimed.
- Fragrance-free formula.
- Versatile tool for makeup artists.
- Doesn't do much to extend the wear time or prevent feathering as claimed.
- Cushiony, silicone-gel texture may pill and feel slightly drying as it wears off.
Two interesting things about Smashbox are that its name refers to the early, accordion-style cameras and that Smashbox is first and foremost a Hollywood-based photography studio. The company's creators, Dean and Davis Factor, have their heritage in makeuptheir great-grandfather was the legendary makeup artist Max Factor. The makeup, which debuted in 1996, began as a collection of trendy and fashion-forward colors coupled with a pleasingly neutral palette of foundations, concealers, and powders. Nowadays, there are exceptional options to choose from, but also some color products that fall short due to too sheer formulas or other issues noted in their respective reviews.
Where Smashbox has lived up to their Hollywood makeup pedigree is with a few standout formulas, including impressive lip products as well as excellent foundations, BB and CC cream options. Of course, the brand is also well-known for their range of makeup primerswhether thats a necessary step is up for debatebut nevertheless they do offer a few products in this category that are worth considering.
