Brand Overview

If this daytime moisturizer with sunscreen is supposed to provide maximum moisture, then what about Lauder’s many other almost identical products? They’re still selling their DayWear, Resilience, and Time Zone products, all of which have formulary traits similar to those of Hydrationist. These other moisturizers also make the same claims in terms of moisturizing skin, so how is a consumer to choose? That’s where marketing claims come into play, not quality, and that’s where Hydrationist fits in because there isn’t much to extol. Essentially, all Lauder is stating is that using this product daily will result in younger-looking skin that’s better able to hold on to moisture because its barrier function is improved. That sounds (and is) great for skin, but the fact is such a statement is applicable to any well-formulated moisturizer with sunscreen—and Lauder doesn’t have an ace up their sleeve that no one else does, despite their mostly excellent moisturizers. Although we can’t fault this moisturizer’s in-part avobenzone sunscreen or antioxidant-enriched silky formula, it falls down hard due to one critical issue: Packaging. Putting this brilliant formula in a jar means that the numerous light- and air-sensitive ingredients won’t remain stable once this is opened, not to mention the lack of hygiene from repeatedly sticking your fingers into a product. In better packaging, this would be a great option for normal to dry skin (someone with combination skin will find this too emollient for oily areas). As is, the packaging keeps this from being the moisturizer your skin deserves.

Estee Lauder At-A-Glance

The history of Estee Lauder goes back to 1946, when the woman who created the brand (and for whom it is named) began selling creams and lotions made by her chemist uncle. From its humble beginnings, Estee Lauder has grown to become a multibillion-dollar company whose products are sold all over the world and advertised in just about every fashion and women's lifestyle magazine available.

The biggest compliment we can pay to the venerable Estee Lauder line is that their moisturizers and serums can largely be described as state-of-the-art. Though fragrance is often intrusive, but when it comes to formulary excellence culminating in products that give skin what it needs to function optimally, they are tough to beat.

When it comes to makeup, by and large the brand also exceeds expectations. Though there are some under-performing products (you can read more about them in our individual reviews), Lauder has a number of excellent options, most notably its lip colors.
