Brand Overview

This is yet another of Burt's Bees' lip balms that has an emollient formula that will definitely make chapped lips softer but that also includes ingredients that aren't the best for dry lips. This formulary pattern is the norm for Burt's Bees, which is frustrating because this would be among the better lines for lip balms if only they'd eliminate the problematic ingredients.

The amount of non-fragrant oils included (such as sunflower, coconut, castor, and soybean) as well as shea butter help prevent moisture loss. Unfortunately, this formula also contains a high amount of flavoring in the ingredient list, although they don't list exactly what flavoring is being used. Without knowing what the flavoring contains, there's no way to know if it could cause irritation.

Also not the best is the fact that this formula includes fragrance ingredients that pose a risk of irritation, such as linalool, limonene, and geraniol. So even though the price is right, this balm could be so much better, and we think your lips deserve the best!

  • Contains effective emollients and plant oils to protect and soften lips.
  • Inexpensive.
  • Contains fragrant ingredients that can cause irritation and make chapped lips worse.
Jar Packaging: No

Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Cera Alba (Beeswax, Cire D'abeille), Aroma (Flavor)*, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Lanolin, Pyrus Communis (Pear) Fruit Extract, Ammonium Glycyrrhizate, Tocopherol, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Canola Oil (Huile De Colza), Linalool, Limonene, Geraniol.

Strengths: Inexpensive.

Weaknesses: Many products have potent fragranced formulas; several formulas packaged in jars, which compromises their ingredients.

With humble beginnings in the town of Bangor, Maine, Burt's Bees is a brand focused on natural-themed, earth-friendly skincare. Unfortunately, in many cases, this also translates to less than beneficial formulas as not all of the natural ingredients used are helpful for skin.

Many of the plant extracts and oils used in these products, including orange oil, cinnamon oil, clove oil, lemon oil, eucalyptus oil, pine tar, alcohol, lime oil, and balsam peru, are problematic for skin and present a significant risk of irritation or a sensitizing reaction. Both the intriguing philosophy and inexpensive products are attractive, but it takes more than that to establish reliable products that are good for skin. Its also important to consider the potential benefit (or potential harm) of the ingredients used.

There are some formulas to consider among the brands offerings, but some to be wary of, see our individual reviews on Burt's Bees products for more details.
