Brand Overview

NYX's Hydra Touch Oil Primer is a welcome addition to the world of facial oils, where most products contain ingredients that, while oils, aren't the kind that are great for anyone's skin.

This product comes in a clear pump container, meaning it's a clean and convenient way to dispense the oil inside. As expected, this does have an oily texture initially, but absorbs into skin within a couple of minutes to provide a dewy finish that's best for those with dry to very dry skin (those with oily or combination skin will find this emphasizes shine). Because clear packaging can degrade light-sensitive ingredients like the antioxidant-loaded oils in this formula, we recommend storing this in a drawer, away from light.

As a primer this works as well as any other facial oil, creating a smooth canvas for makeup application when applied sparingly. It does extend the wear of foundation by about a half-hour, though not any better than simply prepping dry skin with an emollient moisturizer.

The biggest positive about Hydra Touch Oil Primer is its ingredients. There are more impressive facial oils available, with a greater blend of beneficial ingredients, but the oils here are nourishing and non-fragrant, counter to most oils found in the drugstore.

If you've been on the hunt for a facial oil with a budget-friendly price tag, then this could be your dry-skin solution.

  • Oil absorbs quickly to provide a dewy finish.
  • Creates a smooth canvas for makeup application.
  • Helps makeup last a bit longer.
  • Contains nourishing, non-fragrant oils.
  • Fragrance free.
  • None.

Smashbox At-A-Glance

This small Los Angelesbased makeup line was founded in 1999 by a woman named Toni Ko. The company's Web site is vague about Ko's background, merely stating that she developed an interest in cosmetics as a teenager and wanted to create her own line of cosmetics. Ko's goal was to produce high-quality products at affordable prices, and that's the draw of NYX (pronounced "nicks") Cosmetics. We are pleased to report that, for the most part, Ko succeeded in her childhood dream.

It is important to note that this line offers a full selection of makeup products, from foundations to lip gloss. However, the only place to access everything NYX Cosmetics has to offer is their Web site. The Ulta chain is the largest distributor of NYX Cosmetics products in the United States, and the line can also be found at Target and Nordstrom Rack, but they carry a smaller selection of NYX products. The good news is that most of the few NYX products Ulta stocks are impressive, especially the powder eyeshadows, which compete evenly with eyeshadows that cost a lot more.
