Brand Overview

Hyaluronic Acid Overnight Hydrating Mask is one of Revolution Skincare’s better skin care formulas, and its dreamy texture sweetens the deal.

Housed in a clear glass jar, Hyaluronic Acid Overnight Hydrating Mask’s densely emollient consistency glides over skin like silk. The instructions say to apply 1-2 times a week and leave on overnight, but really, you could apply this as often as you like considering the benefits and how great it feels.

Skin-replenishing glycerin and sweet almond oil are on hand, as well as the namesake hyaluronic acid (in the form of sodium hyaluronate). Sodium hyaluronate is a less expensive but just as beneficial derivative of hyaluronic acid, which has incredible moisture-binding properties to help skin look and feel plump and supple. Given this mask’s name and claims, we’d love to see the sodium hyaluronate in higher concentration here, but for the price, we’ll take it.

We support Revolution’s recommendation to wear this fragrance-free mask overnight. The longer the ingredients are in contact with skin, the better, leaving it incredibly soft, smooth and hydrated.

This mask’s one real downfall is the jar packaging. That’s because dipping your fingers into the water-based formula introduces bacteria that stresses the preservative system. It also allows the light- and air-sensitive ingredients (antioxidants like sweet almond oil and vitamin E) to break down prematurely. To limit light exposure, keep this jar stored somewhere dark (like a drawer).

That aside, you’re getting the most benefit out of Hyaluronic Acid Overnight Hydrating Mask’s hydrating properties so we’re happy to recommend this affordably priced option in that regard.

Pros:
  • Unique densely-emollient whipped consistency glides over skin like silk.
  • Contains sodium hyaluronate to help plump and hydrate skin.
  • Skin-replenishing glycerin and sweet almond oil add to the softening/smoothing properties.
  • Fragrance free.
Cons:
  • Jar packaging holds the formula back from its full potential.
Jar Packaging: Yes
Tested on animals: No

United Kingdom-based Revolution Skincare is the skin care branch of Revolution Beauty (who also has a color cosmetic subbrand, Makeup Revolution). Launched in 2018, the brand’s founder, Adam Minto, says the line’s ethos is the same as its parent brand; providing inexpensive, fast-to-market options designed for a wide range of people.

This skin care collection isn’t exactly a “revolutionary” concept, per se – the brand has a lot in common with other up-and-comers such as The Ordinary and Good Molecules. All of these products have a focus on stripped-down formulas featuring key ingredients (such as hyaluronic acid, for example) that can be mixed, layered, and alternated in to a complete skin care routine based on personal preference and occasional needs.

Revolution’s skin care products are something of a mixed bag. There are some true winners in the bunch (among them a couple of interesting retinol alternatives), but there are also quite a few missteps. Some of the products contain the skin-drying type of alcohol and irritating citrus extracts. Then there’s the concern that most of the products are housed in frosted bottles that need to be stored away from daylight, since the packaging puts their delicate ingredients at risk of light exposure that can cause those ingredients to lose their effectiveness. Side note: We reached out to the brand several times to inquire about whether their glass bottles have a UV light coating, but we have not received a response so far.

Overall, we appreciate the approach of potent skin care at bargain prices – we just wish the execution were a bit better! You can find our more about Revolution Skincare at https://www.revolutionbeauty.com/en/Skincare/c-58.aspx.
