Hollywood Lips Matte Contour Liquid Lipstick
Hollywood Lips Matte Contour Liquid Lipstick earns our praise for delivering long-lasting color. Some of the claims are over-the-top, but it's still a product that we're happy to recommend based on performance.
With a velvety, whipped consistency and curved sponge applicator, this is a cinch to apply in one swoop. We wouldn't go as far as to say the formula is moisturizing (you'll want to apply a balm underneath if you have dry lips), but it definitely doesn't feel as drying as many other liquid lipsticks, so you get relatively comfortable wear.
The shades range from bold to neutral, with a true matte finish that resists transferring, bleeding, or feathering. The deeper shades leave a subtle stain of color that lives on even after the top layer wears off.
You can ignore the exaggerated claims about "anti-aging sea lavender, hyaluronic acid and collagen-boosting actives." Ironically, there isn't even hyaluronic acid or collage-boosting ingredients of any sort in this formula. FYI: The sea lavender is listed as Limonium gerberi extract, which is unrelated to skin-sensitizing lavender. That's a relief, but in terms of benefits, it's one of the last ingredients listed, so it probably won't make any difference.
As long as you're not buying into the anti-aging claims, this is a great liquid lipstick to consider for beautiful color that lasts without the uncomfortable feel so many matte lip products have.
Note: This lipstick has a subtle vanilla flavor, which is completely fine since vanilla is one of the few non-irritating fragrance ingredients available.
- Velvety, whipped consistency sets to a stay-put matte finish.
- Wears more comfortably than many liquid lipsticks.
- Resists transferring; color doesn't bleed.
- Options of bold or neutral shades.
- Flavored with non-irritating vanilla.
- Overstated anti-aging claims.
Charlotte Tilbury At-A-Glance
Charlotte Tilbury's journey into creating her own makeup line began back in her teen years when she discovered the transformative power of makeup. Fast-forward several years and celebrity clients later, Tilbury made a name for herself as a makeup artist who epitomized the glamorous beauty of the supermodel era in the 90s. Along the way, she became a consultant for beauty brands, and eventually decided to create her own line of makeup and select skincare products in 2013.
One of the strong suits of Charlotte Tilburys makeup is her take on color. The woman knows her way around flattering a complexion and making features pop, and you can see that in her shade range. That doesn't mean you wont find some misses along the way, but as a whole, the line offers an impressive selection of color.
Tilbury's skincare, on the other hand, doesn't fare quite as well. Between the use of jar packaging and some highly fragranced formulas, skin is left compromised (see individual reviews for details).
In no small way Tilbury's years of painting beautiful faces has helped shape what her makeup line is today. If you don't mind the $$$ factor, it's worth taking a look at the standouts which earn our highest rating.
Strengths: Excellent color selection; natural-looking foundation and concealer.
Weaknesses: The iconic Magic Cream comes in a jar; some highly fragranced formulas.
